Cut and pasted from eBird - here's my year list for 2013.  (It's admittedly not the prettiest format, but meh.)

Italicized birds are introduced.  Birds that are italicized and struck through are exotics that are not countable by current ABA guidelines were nevertheless seen free-flying and are reproducing in the wild. Bolded birds are lifers first ( Read more... )

I just want to tell you, I'm not much of a bird-watcher, but I saw a Blue Heron for the first time in my life totally randomly, it was standing in a creek next to a road in the woods. They just migrate through here and I got really excited and it was beautiful. I thought of you because you are the only person I know who is a birder. :)

Great Blue Herons are really awesome, and it's amazing how you can seemingly find one in the tiniest bit of water sometimes. I've even seen one fly along I-40 in remote NW New Mexico.

I'll definitely check out Chilao campground. Never seen Mountain Quails before.

Chilao is amazing for So Cal mountain specialties. It's also almost the only place you can walk around without needing to purchase an Adventure Pass in the warmer months (I hadn't realized the need for one until I was 15 miles from anywhere so Charlton Flat was off limits). Fortunately I got all my targets (and then some) from Chilao and Red Box.

Even without birding, the views of some of those mountain valleys are spectacular, though it's obvious the forest fires of the last decade have hit those mountains really hard.
