On Tuesday (3 Aug) morning, I woke up and yawn... Found out that my mouth couldn't open wide! Immediately I know what was the problem...

About 5 years back my right face was slammed against a shelving when I had too much fun playing around. My jaw became a little loose since then. When I open my jaw widely, it has clicking sound. Once in a bluemoon ( Read more... )

Hey,

I just came across your blog post. I am suffering from locked jaw too and I'm not able to open my mouth too wide. Was wondering how's your jaw after the treatment and has the problem recurred and how useful was the splint?

Thanks!

Hi breakfastbanter, after wearing my splint every night (to prevent the teeth grinding each other while sleeping), my jaw issue doesn't bother me anymore. Times come when I am stress at work or I forgot to wear the splint for a few nights, my jaw will feel sore, sometimes lead to migraine and ringing sound in my ear. So I will need to keep on wearing the splint and massaging jaw just which is the area infront of the ears, massage lightly to make it feel relax and less tense.
I refrain from eating stuffs that are too hard, too chewy, things that need a lot of force to bite on so it will not strain the muscles and the jaw.
After 3 years since then, I only have sore jaw once in a blue moon. Just keep wearing the splint, massage the jaw frequently, exercise the jaw by opening closing mouth slowly and widely, don't bite hard stuffs, don't lean on stuffs against the chin (it will cause stress on the jaw joint too), don't clench the teeth and you will be alright. :)

Thanks so much for the info! Just one more question ... did the dentist adjust your jaw back to its original position? :)

Hi, I came across your blog while looking up on TMJ as I am also suffering from a locked jaw. May I know if after wearing the splint, are you now able to open your mouth fully like you used to? Are you still experiencing locked jaw issues?

Not sure if you will see this comment as this blogpost was posted quite a while back haha, but thanks in advance :)

Hi! Thks for stopping by and commenting here. May I know how long you have ypur locked jaw already? I would advise you to immediately visit a dentist if it is severe.. or even it is not, still to visit one as it may become more severe if you do not get your jaw alignment back in order. A dentist will definitely help you to align them back so you can open your mouth fully again but usually it takes days to a couple weeks for your mouth to open as wide as u could used to because the muscles takes time to heal. The splint isn't the one that helps you unlock your jaw. It is meant to prevent you from having a lock jaw again. The splint I have is for me to wear during the night to prevent me from biting and grinding my teeth, thus save the jaw joint from damaging further and prevent my jaw from locking. I have worn this splint for 8 yrs and I do not have lock jaw since I posted this blog post. I hope my reply helps u and allow u to understand more of TMJ. :)

Thanks for the reply and the long explanation! I've actually visited a doctor, who tried to unjam my jaw, just a few weeks back. However, till now, I still couldn't open as wide as I used to, so I was kinda worried if this is how i'm gna live with for the rest of my life haha :/ hmm maybe it requires more time... I made a splint too, hopefully it helps/ prevents it from worsening. In any case, thanks so much for taking the time to reply to my questions! :-)

Ahh I see~ yah, I guess what u could do while waiting it to fully heal up is to do some massaging to relax the jaw muscles as what I've mentioned in my post.. also prevent from eating food that r hard to bite or chew and prevent closing ur teeth together at all times, always remind yourself to leave a little gap between upper and bottom teeth when you close your mouth. I hope you do visit your doctor for review. In any case if it doesn't heal up after a couple of months, you probably need to tell the doctor and check if the jaw alignment is correctly done. Nonetheless i wish u speedy recovery :)
