Based on the meme thingy I did a month ago. The song its based on is "1000 words," featured in the Final Fantasy games.
Sometimes, one could see things coming and still not be ready to face them. Yuugi thought that the one and only example would be when the pharaoh had departed, in a less literal sense. It wasn’t so much that he wasn’t ready to be separate from the pharaoh - he was. He just didn’t want him to leave, not even saying a personal goodbye and instead giving an almost-cold-shoulder. But that was okay, because it was for the best.
But too-soon after, even if Atem had left months ago (almost a year) Yuugi had another example. True, it might not take nearly as long for him to see Anzu again as it would for him to see the pharaoh, but “maybe over a year or two” was still a pretty long time. Alas, it was for the best.
Anzu had announced that she was leaving soon, hopefully before their freshmen year of college. It would be more convenient to be in Julliard or whatever university by then, so Anzu could have a clean start. And she told them this while they were eating lunch at a Chow King, right after Jonouchi tried to steal her noodles.
Yuugi didn’t register the words right away. They had all graduated together just recently, and as far as he knew, they were all going to an already-assigned college. He thought that it was great that all his friends were still here, even when he wasn’t, and that he could lean on them and just have fun with all of them. They could do stupid, fun things that the pharaoh was always too serious for. He and Anzu were supposed to catch a really low-budget horror film the next day, just the two of them. For the rest of their trip, Yuugi felt no resentment when he looked at Anzu, only sad at the predicament of her absence. It was later that Yuugi stared at his phone, wondering if he should say that he was too sick to go out.
He wasn’t ready for this.
Yes, Anzu was his oldest friend, and he couldn’t remember a time when she wasn’t right where he could always reach her. Yes, he was being clingy to her, to all his friends, because someone else dear to him was gone. Yes, he ignored Ryou’s concern by lying that he was fine, giving a fake smile, and dismissing the topic of Anzu’s departure. And yes, he probably wouldn’t be this upset if anyone else would be the one who was leaving him.
He didn’t believe all of what Anzu said. “It could wait,” was probably a lie. This was Anzu’s big dream, the one she had ever since she was little and didn’t tell anyone about until they were high school sophomores. What’s more, she couldn’t book her flight right before freshmen year and expect to get settled so quickly. But what was definitely a lie was “maybe over a year or two,” because he knew Anzu was good enough to stay in America for the rest of her life, that she could make her dream bigger than she thought possible, and in order to do that, it might mean a lot longer than “maybe over a year or two.” Just over two years seemed so little for her.
He looked at the mirror when he wondered just how long Anzu would be gone, and he saw a big frown on his face. He didn’t look like the other him, the pharaoh. His eyes didn’t look so serious as they looked seriously miserable.
It’s true that he “surpassed” Atem, but he wasn’t Atem. Yuugi probably couldn’t have left his friends as surely as the pharaoh did, and even if Yuugi could have, he’d have been crying throughout. And then a strange image came to him: A brightly lit passage not unlike the one Atem had walked through, but in the pharaoh’s place was Anzu, a smile on her face as she spared a little glance back before walking away.
What a ridiculous image. New York City cannot possibly be that sunny.

A/N: The problem with getting it done was that I had no drive. Stuff kept coming up that ticked me off, not related to the fic. Originally, it was a longer oneshot in Anzu's POV -- very light-hearted and fluffy -- but I couldn't continue it. Then I went with this, but again, it was supposed to be longer. I already have half done, but I'm not sure the other half will be done soon, or maybe ever.
But just to tell you, Yuugi isn't resentful. If he is, it's not towards Anzu or Atemu, but towards his situation. He's already been turn from one of them, why does he have to say goodbye to another? Even though he was "ready" to let go and be seperated fro Atem, that didn't stop Atem from being a friend who Yuugi may not see for a long, long time. Now it's Anzu.
Oh, I really wish I could produce a whole whopping oneshot. :gonk: I'm sorry, but tell me what you think!
