There's a man sitting on the couch by the fire, with a cup of tea and a small stack of books on the table beside him. He flips through one book for a few minutes, then switches to one of the others. He does not seem in a hurry to finish any of them. (If you have seen Sherlock Holmes around this place before, you might find that this man looks like him--exactly like him.)
A few days later, a young man comes in through the front door. He has never been here before, but he has the walk and easy expression of a regular. He is dressed for 19th century London, though his clothes do not quite fit (too long in the cuffs, too wide at the shoulders). He takes a seat at the bar and orders a glass of whiskey.

this story I wrote for the Holmes Big Bang. Threads with him will likely contain spoilers. Let me know which version of him you'd prefer, or I'll flip a coin. :D]
