early trick-or-treaters

So if any trick-or-treaters actually have the temerity to show up obscenely early (i.e., before noon), while I'm still in my bathrobe, is it OK to hide and pretend no one's home? ;)

Good grief, yes! Considering that sunset is traditional, that's definitely "obscenely early," and they have no reason to expect that a large number of people will even be home (since plenty of American adults have outside-the-home jobs, for heaven's sake).

I say yes. I wouldn't hand out anything before about four pm, which is when I'm used to the smalest kids starting their trick or treating.

That's true--we don't usually get many before then, either. Occasionally, parents of really little kids will take them out earlier, but only occasionally.

If anyone comes this early, they're likely to be really old people, as most everyone else is in school or work! ;)

I think if old people came to my door trick-or-treating, I would make an exception for them.

Old people deserve candy, too! :)
