“Come on! Just do it! You’ll enjoy it when you’ve done it, trust me!” I called out loudly, grinning at you cheekily and holding your hand tightly. The air was cold enough for a cloud of mist to appear every time we breathed out. Looking around, I couldn’t help but smile. Everything always looked so much more beautiful at nighttime. While I was staring around in wonder, you just sighed and sat back down, leaning your elbow on your knee and resting your head on your free hand, still holding mine just as tightly.

“I can’t.” You offered up simply, as if in explanation for your melancholy mood. Straight away I knew there was something wrong, but I also knew you. There was no way in hell you’d actually talk about something bothering you. Instead, I had to take your mind off of it. As fast as that thought occurred to me, so did another, and I knew how I was going to cheer you up.

“Why not?” I asked, my face falling slightly at the rejection. I let go of your hand and started spinning, energy practically radiating out of my skin. It was amazing, better than any drug I could ever get my hands on.

“Stop it, you’re making me dizzy.” You muttered, still staring at your feet like they were the most interesting thing there. To you, they probably were. “I don’t like parks. It’s cold outside. And anyway…we’re too old?” You suggested, trying to make up excuses.

“Cold weather is best. Parks are always fun, and there’s no one around. Who cares if we’re not little kids? That’s your problem. So wrapped up in here…caring what everyone else sees.” I smiled sadly, tapping your head and nudging your side, “Gotta live a little, Gee. Get out there! Be free.” I sat next to you and just looked up at you sadly. I knew that if nothing else worked, the pout always won.

“Don’t look at me like that.” You warned, turning away from me. I moved around to your other side and kept up the sad face onslaught, knowing full well that you were just moments away from cracking.

“Fine. I’ll do it!” You sighed, raising your hands in defeat, “But only once, okay?” You said firmly. I just smirked and jumped up, dragging you forcefully through the dark playground towards the swings. I jumped on one quickly and turned to you.

“Push me?” I asked, looking at you. You didn’t even bother to argue back any more, and just walked behind the swing set, getting ready to push me.

“No, you don’t do it like that.” I shook my head in disappointment, putting on a very serious tone as I mock scolded you. “You push from the front. Swings always go higher when you push from the front.” I said exasperatedly.

“Oh, I’m sorry. How could I not have known that.” You said sarcastically, moving to the front of the swings and pushing me, gently at first, then harder. Still, there wasn’t much effort in your pushes, and I wasn’t going fast. It got boring, and eventually I decided I wanted to get off.

“Think fast!” I shouted and launched myself off the swings, heading straight for you. You didn’t react quick enough and I landed on top of you. I laughed and started to tickle you. You writhed and squirmed underneath me as you tried to get away. Then you managed to hook one of your legs around mine and flip us over, so that you now had the advantage.

“Oh man, I so did not plan for that.” I whined slightly, preparing myself for the inevitable revenge. But it didn’t come. I looked at you and found you studying me carefully.

“What?” I said, looking confused, “What’s wrong?” You shushed me by pressing your finger to my lips and pulled out a notepad and pencil. You started sketching me quickly, pencil flying over the page, stopping only to smudge something a little, or erase something that went wrong. When you finally finished you looked at me again and smiled.

“What was up with that?” I asked, still lying underneath you.

“I don’t know, but I just…really wanted to draw you. You looked so happy. Free.” You said, saying the last word almost wistfully, as though you wanted my apparent ‘freedom’.

“Can I see it?” I asked, moving my hand around to your back pocket. You pushed my hand away with the hand holding you up and lost your balance. You landed almost on top of me and we both started laughing all over again.

“Didn’t think that one through so well.” You said simply, blushing faintly. You looked so…innocent. ‘And cute.’ I thought, to my surprise. And then, even more to my surprise, you leant forward and closed the gap between us, kissing my cheek gently. You pulled away slightly and looked at me worriedly. I smiled and put my hand on the back of your neck, closing the gap again. But this time, I kissed your lips. It was an innocent kiss, nothing more than our lips touching. But that was all it needed to be.

If it had been anything else, it would have taken away from the perfection of the moment. But as it was, just two kids lying in the park at 3 o’ clock in the morning, kissing quietly to the hum of traffic on the nearby road, it was perfect.
