On December 10th a very good friend of mine went into the hospital for a slightly less than routine surgery to correct a very bad case of diverticulitus a digestive system disorder, which he had been battling for roughly a year

What a terrible ordeal for your friend, and his loved ones, (and you)! I have no doubt that it was that soup, made with love, that brought him healing. I love potato soup!

been there and done that but sort of in reverse.Hubby had a perforated colon from diverticulitis.Half dead from infection he spent 6 days with a picc line to keep from dying. Then they sent him home with me for 3 weeks of Cipro to reduce as much infection as they could before attempting surgery.Knowing your loved one has a perforated colon and living in terror of something terrifyingly awful for 3 weeks does not do a body good. Then surgery and 9 days in the hospital after. 40 lbs lost in as many days. Not a diet I'd recommend to anyone. You are a good friend. Now you need to take care of you.

A new face, nice of you to comment.
You know exactly the "feelings" that were swirling around during this episode. I am so glad to hear that your husband recovered. This entire time I only broke down once and cried, it was right after the doctor came in and laid it all out good and bad then made his exit. I think it was just the realization that I was the one in charge of my friend's fate which was huge in my book.
When my friend "hit the wall" and began to cry and that was it for me. You are right about the terror it comes in and grabs you, sucks out every bit of energy you might have in reserve.
He will be returning to the hospital in a few weeks to re-connect the pipes and I pray that this will give him a new beginning.
Again, thank you for writing these kind words, you take care of you as well.

I see you at friesmithsghost's place...I tend to follow my friends to their friends because hey at least there's a really good chance we're somewhat alike, right? I hope the reconnection goes better than the first round. Having seen the effects of not being able to,ironically, this has made me appreciate the absolute need of the human body to pass gas...and I will never begrudge anyone ever again. This surgery is the absolute worst, most painful thing I have ever seen a human being go through.
