I have always been so behind on The Beatles. But, like Nebraska, when I saw Rubber Soul there at Half Price Books I took a deep breath and said to myself, "Ok. The time has come." And it really is great, especially some of the tracks I'd never heard before like "Think For Yourself" and "I'm Looking Through You."
And as much as I love Mingus, my favorite jazz dude of all time is really emerging to be Ornette Coleman. And only partly because he sounds like Ellen.

I forget that not everyone spent grades 7-9 obsessively listening to every Beatles record, over and over.
Rubber Soul and Revolver are some of my favorite Beatles albums. They're still pop records, but they're a lot less constrained than the earlier ones, and they sound a lot less like oldies radio.
And because I'm a Beatles nerd, I have to ask: did you get the UK release or the US release? I had the US release. It starts with "I've Just Seen a Face," which I love, but is missing some great songs from the UK version.

I believe I have the UK version as it starts with "Drive My Car."
One album I also have to mention is The Velvet Underground's Loaded which I've gotten really into the past month. We've discussed before how you think it really is just a ripoff of the Stones but I like how what was Andy Warhol's weirdo house band only a couple years before get so effectively poppy but still a little crazy. And Lou Reed has majorly grown on me the past couple years.
Right on! I'd say if I had to order them, I'd say Portishead, TVOTR, and Fleet Foxes are my top three.
I think what really grabbed me about Third was how it distilled out exactly what makes Portishead so great and filtered out all the "trip hop" residue. And I never really knew before what made them so great as opposed to someone like Tricky but now I see how unique they are. Also, we should form a band:
Adrian Utley = You Geoff Barrow = Me Beth Gibbons = Marisa

Also, had you really not listened to Rubber Soul before 2008?
