Previous Chapter Chapter Seven
Bzzt! Bzzt!
I quickly took out my phone to check to see who was texting me, Pyro! "Any luck?"
I clicked away with frustration, "No work >< Looks like the only thing left is selling my body."
He replied back fast, "Sounds good to me ;) How much ya chargin'?"
"Idiot."
It hasn't been long since I decided to date Pyro. And truthfully I didn't get to see him all the time, but we talked every day. He either called me or texted. Honestly, I really cared about him; maybe I was falling for him... The way he picked on me, his perversion, his serious expressions and lack of interest, even his strange sense of justice being in Wild 7. He always had me thinking about him.
I sighed loudly as I looked up at the clouds. I was able to convice Ms. Crabby Landlady to dely a week so long as I found a job by then, but the promised date was getting closer and closer. And it's been a month already and still no job. Pyro gave me money to help, but I still needed work. I couldn't stand having to take his money, I didn't like taking anyone's money. I looked down at my phone and frowned. I hated asking for favors, but desperate times called for desperate measures.
I was pretty nervous as the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hi Johnny, are you busy?"
"Ai-chan! Mm, no not entirely." I heard him shuffling around.
What does that mean? "Um well, I was wondering if I could ask you for a favor..." I bit my lip.
"What is it?"
"Do you think you could help me find a job? I know you have a lot of connections and I mean if it's not too much trouble, you can totally say no, I just-"
"You're talking too fast," he laughed. "Sure I'll help you, I wouldn't be a good brother if I didn't help now would I?"
I was so relieved, "Thank you so much!"
"Sure. I'll call up a few people and see what I can do ok?"
"Thank you! Thank you!"
"No it's ok, it's no problem. Well I have to go now."
We both stopped talking and I just so happened to overhear a woman in the background. "Johnny~ Come back over here~"
I got a little mad, but tried to sound uninterested since he was helping me out and all, "Work I take it?"
"Of course."
"Ok, well, talk to you later."
"Byebye."
I hung up and couldn't help but feel a little upset. I let out a deep breath and decided not to think about it too much. He knew what he was doing, so I let it go. I got up and stretched my body a little as I decided to head back home and rest.
I reached the bus as my phone started ringing, "Hello?"
Pyro sounded different, I couldn't put my finger on it, "After I finish up with these assholes do you wanna go out?"
"W-what?!" I looked around and nodded my head silently apologizing to everyone else on the bus. I covered my mouth and the phone to try and get privacy, "Why all of a sudden? Shouldn't you be more concerened with your work!"
"Well, right now, I'm just looking around Central Station and I figured I'd ask you out. We could all die today anyways."
Ok, I was getting freaked out, "Will you not try and scare me!"
"If I'm gonna die, I figured I'd wanna hear your voice first."
I couldn't really think of anything to say... I was actually touched.
"Hey I have to go, ya know, save the world," the smirk in his voice.
"You idiot."
It's all I could say before he hung up. I looked down at my phone trying to make sure that all just happened. Who knew he could say something so embarrassing without being embarrassed to say it! Just thinking about it made me blush. He truly was an idiot.
The sun was just starting to set as I reached home. But as I was unlocking my door, I heard the motorcycle. I turned around to see him hold up a second helmet for me. I couldn't help but try and hold back a smile as I re-locked my door and hurried over to him.
"I see you didn't die..." but as I looked at him, he looked a bit dirty from sweating, "Are you sure you're ok?"
"Never been better honey."
"Ugh, don't call me that." It sounded gross coming from him. I swung my leg over the bike to get on behind him.
He turned so he could put the helmet on me, getting rather close to my face, "Then what should I call you?"
"...Ai is fine."
"Then, Ai... what would you like to do?"
"Just ride."
He smiled, "Perfect." He reached around to grab my arm, "HOld on tight then."
I scooted closer to his back and wrapped my arms around his stomach, intertwining my fingers, holding on closely to him. I've never been on a bike before, so I was actually pretty scared. The rumbling from the bike shaked my body, giving me a jolt. He laughed, which made me smile.
It felt nice feeling the wind in my face, it reminded me of the time I was training in the field at Sunshine. But before my thoughts could go towards Gum, I quickly tightened my grip on Pyro and closed my eyes, just concentrating on the noises from the bike.
"You can let go now, we're here."
Half an hour flew by before I know it. I opened my eyes and we were by the beach. "Oh?"
I was too distracted that I didn't realise I was still holding on to him. To be honest, I've only ever been to the beach once. And that one time was too short to really call it a visit.
"Can't seem to be apart from me ne~?"
I unwrapped my hands and quickly got off. I slid off the helmet and pushed it into his chest, "Get over yourself."
He smirked as he put the helmets away and followed me to the wall overlooking the ocean. I didn't notice him at all as he stood next to me. All I could think about was my Mother. She always talked about the ocean, but never got the chance to see it. Even though she was always so close to it.
"I wish my Mother could see this." I smiled, "She'd probably say 'Look Ai! The ocean looks so happy.'" I quickly wiped the tear that was falling, "I miss her."
"Ai...I know I'm not the best person right now to comfort you, and honestly I suck at it, but if you'll let me, I'll hug you."
"How can you be such an idiot one second, and then be so nice the next?" I wiped another tear.
"Is that a compliment or an insult," he chuckled.
I turned towards him and noticed his leather jacket was unzipped so I wrapped my arms aroud his waist under the jacket, placing my head on his chest, "A little bit of both."
I could feel his heart starting to beat faster. I teased him, "Someone nervous?"
"Listen, I haven't done the boyfriend thing... well... let's just say I've only really ever cared about myself so I don't have much experience. And I know we've only been together... fuck, we've only known each other for a short time, but I wanna be someone who desereves you." He held me at arms length and thought real hard about something. Maybe something from his past.
It was hard to believe that the same guy who was standing in front of me was in prison not too long ago. And now took part in killing criminals for the government. And this guy was my boyfriend.
"Pyro...I"
"Ai?!"
It was suddenly like things were in slow motion as I turned around to see Gum looking back at me. He looked from me to Pyro and then back again to me. It looked like he was going to throw up. After several moments he just looked pissed. Time suddenly seemed to catch up as he was pulling me away from Pyro and dragging me hard by the arm.
"HEY!" Pyro ran after us and quickly pushed Gum away from me, getting in between us. "Don't touch her!"
Gum was suddenly walking up fast to his brother, and punched him hard across the jaw. I heard something pop loud. I gasp loudly as Pyro quickly returend the favor. They started exchanging hits. Blood splattered on the concrete as Gum fell to his hands and knee's on the ground. But with a swift kick to Pyro's legs, Pyro was soon on his side, blood dripping from his head where he hit the ground. Both of them were soon standing up again and beating the shit out of each other.
What do I do? I couldn't seem to move from the shock of seeing them together.
'Move Ai! MOVE!'
"S-stop!!!" I ran to them and quickly got in between of their fight, both suddenly holding back their fists so as not to hit me. Both bloody and soaked in sweat. "Gum just stop it!"
"HOW THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT ME TO ACCEPT THIS?!" He paced back and forth, "Are you two together?!"
Pyro spit out some blood from his mouth, "Yeah! We are!"
"Sh-shut up Pyro!"
Gum's chest heaved in anger as he started walking again towards Pyro, fist raised, "I'll kill you!"
I ran to Gum and wrapped my arms around him, using all my force to try and keep him from taking another step, "NO! STOP IT!" Of course he had overpowered me, and unintentially pushed me back hard to the ground. I scraped my hands trying to cushion my fall.
Pyro ran over to me, "Are you ok?" He took my hands in his to look at the damage.
Gum just stood there looking at the both of us, but he only talked to me, "Has he told you the truth?" I could tell he was trying to talk rationally, but was barely doing it.
"Truth?"
Gum laughed in such a sadistic way, it was almost like Pyro and Gum had switched places.
I looked up at Pyro, but he only looked at Gum with that same hate I saw in Gum's eyes. I was so confused about it all. I closed my eyes and tried to think. I made up my mind.
"I don't care about the truth! I trust Pyro now for who he is now!"
Both stopped looking from one another to look at me. This time I was the one to hold Gum's gaze. I stood up and took a couple steps closer to him, he backed way as if I had a knife and I was going to stab him, shock in his eyes. And soon the shock disapperead and was replaced with sadness and anger.
"Gum, I-"
"You don't understand a goddamn thing Ai! YOU'RE SUCH A FOOL!"
I was officially brought to tears, "Gum I'm sorry!"
He gave me the most distrustful look I've ever recieved, "Forget it."
And he was gone.
I cried out loud like I've never have before, my hands dirtying my face as I tried hiding behind them. Pyro took off his jacket and put it over my shoulders. He took his red handkerchief and moved my hands away from my face to start cleaning it. I looked up at him; he was the one who needed such gentle care. Blood dripped from the side of his head onto his ear and down his shirt, his cheeks were bruised, a bloody nose, and a thin line of dried blood coming from his mouth.
"Come on, I'll take you home," he said as he walked past me to his bike.
It suddenly felt like I was rejected as he got on his bike and waited for me to come over to him. I slowly made my way to him, as I felt paralyzed from suddenly feeling so alone. As I sat down on the bike I pulled my arms through his jacket, to put the helmet on and hold on tightly to him. Again I felt the wind blow on my face, but this time instead of feeling free, I felt smothered. I felt trapped.
The bike came to a stop. I unwrapped my arms around him; as I got off the bike I took off his helmet, his jacket, and handed both back to him. I suddenly felt cold, as the warmth from his jacket was gone. I held onto his handkerchief not wanting to let it go. If I did give it back to him, I felt like I'd have nothing to remember him by.
I looked up at him, and he looked back at me without much emotion in his face.
"Pyro..."
"I should get going... "
I stood there holding his handkerchief in hand, "Please don't leave! ...Don't leave me all alone..."
"Are you sure?"
I could only nod in response.
He stepped off his bike and pulled me into an embrace, "Ok. I won't, I promise." He looked down at me, wiping the hair out of my face, "Do you want me to stay with you tonight?"
Gum kicked the door open alerting the rest of the guys at The Eight. Arsenal instinctively pulled out his gun and had it aimed at him, but quickly spun it around his finger and placed it back in it's holster realising he was pointing it at his friend. Ace yelled at the noise that woke him up from his nap. Toppo looked up from his game but then quickly started playing again mumbling about distractions.
"How could he do this to me?!"
Mac and Jacky came downstairs complaining about the noise, when suddenly Gum punched a hole in the wall. Johnny quickly ran from behind the bar with a rag in hand. Gum's hand was bleeding from the splintered wood; Johnny wrapped it around and tied it.
"What the hell are you thinking?!" Mac was mad that he'd have to now fix that hole.
Gum looked right back at Mac, "She's with him!"
"Ai? With who," Johnny asked confused.
"With that bastard Pyro!"
Everyone went quiet.
Mac was the first to speak up, "Does she know?"
"No." Gum put his hand to his head trying to figure everything out, "She doesn't care to know the truth! He must be forcing her somehow."
"Listen, Gum," Mac started.
"I know Ai! She wouldn't be with someone like him unless she was being forced to!" He seemd to have made up his mind and was heading towards the exit.
"You'd think Ai is that weak that she can't make up her mind who she wants to be with?" Everyone but Gum looked over at Arsenal. He walked over to him, "You're not the only one who's worried about her. Just think for a moment."
Johnny quickly joined in, "That's right! She's like a sister to me... to all of us. I can't say I'm happy at all to hear that she's with him... but-"
Gum turned towards Johnny, "But what?! Huh?"
JOhnny clenched his fists as he suddenly yelled, "YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD THE BALLS TO FACE PYRO!"
Gum soon raised his fist to punch Johnny in the face, but Jacky quickly got in the way to catch Gum's fist.
"If you so much lay a finger on him, I'll consider this a real fight."
Ace was suddenly up and excited, "Let's do this! I'm eager to start a fight!"
"All of you settle down!" Mac brought his fingers to his forehead, pinching it from stress.
Gum stared angrily at Jacky for a second, but then pulled his fist back, walking away from everyone.
Mac yelled after him, "Where are you going?"
"To get some air!" And before Mac could contest him Gum cut him off, "Don't worry I won't do anything stupid... I'm just going to buy some milk..."
The tension settled down as everyone knew Gum would need to stort this out himself. What they didn't know was that Gum was just leaving so they wouldn't see him cry.
Tears poured out from the corners of his eyes, "Ai..."
