Map o' crime

Garland and I are considering moving to a different neighborhood in Minneapolis, and we've had many conversations about which areas are safe. You'd think there would be some simple map, maybe published by the local newspaper, indicating which places nice upstanding folk really shouldn't live. Instead, everyone seems to go by rumour and innuendo, ( Read more... )

First off...OMFG Daniel, ummm most Jews just embrace the Chinese/Indian food movie thing. This all day project seems to confirm the "rumour and innuendo, tinged with a bit of old-fashioned racism" or simply stay out of the northside. I'm glad to see it starts to taper as it gets to the NE boundries though.

Well, it shows that Northeast Minneapolis any safer than most of North Minneapolis (except for the deep green Folwell neighborhood in North Minneapolis, which is really really bad). It also shows that if you go WAY north (past County D) the crime drops off a lot. And it shows that the area between Downtown and Lake Street is very safe, which I never would have guessed because it doesn't really feel that way.

The city puts tons of PDFs of maps out on their web site, usually without distributing the corresponding data files that let you analyze the maps. For example, they put up PDFs of the ShotSpotter maps every week, showing every shot fired inside the city limits -- but there's no way to get the underlying coordinates and (say) plot them over an entire year. They also don't release the correspondence between neighborhoods and Census tracts, which I know they have (they don't conduct their own census!) and would be really useful. Is there a city government version of FOIA, and can you use it to request computer files?

Now, Daniel, what I'd love to see is a 2nd map w/ little dots on it so I can know where people you know have chosen to live so far! How we fared using our old crime-analysis methods (rumor, etc.)
