CHAPTER I

The ability to have and express emotions is what humans possess that angels do not have. Angels only watch the processes done by humans in dealing with their emotions and, sometimes, help them in the smallest ways. As much as possible, we try not to engage ourselves too much with humans and their emotions. It is not reasonable for us to intervene since we cannot feel what they feel. And being the angel-god, it is my responsibility to make sure that my fellow angels, especially the young ones, don’t attach themselves with human-related problems. It is really a tough job since they barely listen to me. Basically it is because of me being an angel-god in the later years of my coming of age. And come to think of it, I am the reason why that kind of rule was established. Ironic, isn’t it?

It had been three years since she left that house, the house that was once filled with darkness and sorrow. Silence sits again on its former chair and rules that house. No one really expected that she would disappear in just a tick of the clock. No one saw that day coming except for her. She knew everything and had been preparing for it since she became aware of it. She planned a remarkable and heartbreaking exit. How could she be that selfish? Everyone continued to ask themselves that question up until now.

And now, her plans are coming into life. I look down at that house from the window of my room. A delivery man rings the doorbell and in a matter of seconds, a man named Miyano Takichi as seen in his nametag steps out the house and receives four small packages and a letter. Each box shows the name of its receptor: Miyano Takichi, Kamiyama Sho, Miyano Hiroyuki and Hayato. The letter doesn’t have anything in it but the address of the house. Takichi signs the receiving documents and entered the house. He puts down the packages and the letter on the black leather sofa. Confused, he just sits beside the pile of boxes and stared at the picture on the top of the centre table. He could barely see anything from it since the little ray of sunlight reflected on the frame’s glass.

The room is painted with white, supposing that the paint can make small room to appear larger and be homey. It has a glass sliding door that encloses the room from the garden area. There is a thick beige curtain covering the sliding door but leaves a small space enough for the sunlight to enter yet not enough to lighten up the whole room. The ceiling lights are off, making no help to enlighten the room. It has a lot of pictures; all of them seem to be randomly taken by a photography enthusiast. There is a curtain made of beads that separates the living room from the eating area. Cobwebs, together with dust and dirt, are slowly covering the room completely. It looks like no one dared to clean it for several weeks or even several years. One can surely feel the gloomy atmosphere of the room and the rest of the house.

Another man came down from the stairs with a dark blue acoustic guitar hanging on his right shoulder.  It was the younger brother of Takichi, Miyano Hiroyuki. He passed by in front of his brother who was still sitting on the sofa. He was about to leave the living room when he lifted his head up. He knew that there is something wrong with his brother, seeing him sitting in the sofa instead of opening the restaurant that they own across the street. He turned around and observed the room. It seemed that nothing had changed except for the increasing number of cobwebs and the pile of boxes beside his brother. He then decided to speak up.

“Why are you still here?” He asked sarcastically his brother while cocking his eyebrows. “Aren’t you supposed to open our legendary restaurant and make a living?”

Takichi just looked at his brother and then to the ceiling. He sighed while closing his eyes. It was obvious that there is something bothering him, making him immobile and not do what he was supposed to do for the rest of the day. He stayed like that for ten seconds before finally looking at Hiroyuki who was becoming annoyed with his brother’s emotional act. “Call Kamiyama,” he ordered Hiroyuki. “Tell him it is important.”

“Is that more important than doing his work and opening our restaurant?” Hiroyuki asked while tilting his head sideward.

“Indeed,” Takichi calmly replied back. He then focused his eyes on the packages beside him. “You also stay and wait for him. Do you know where Hayato is?”

“Is he also involved with this problem of yours?” He snorted, annoyed while waiting for Kamiyama to answer his phone. “Damn, Kamiyama. Answer your phone.”

“It is our problem,” the older said, emphasizing the word ‘our’.

“Hello? This is Kamiyama” The man from the other line of Hiroyuki’s phone answered.

“Finally,” Hiroyuki released a breath of relief. “I could have beaten you up if you didn’t answer your phone.”

“Eh? Hiroyuki-kun?” Kamiyama asked.

“Hai. Aniki wants to see and talk to you.”

“In the restaurant?”

“No, in our house.”

“But, I’m still having a class,” Kamiyama excused.

“Then, why are talking to me in the phone if your in the middle of the class?! Baka!”

“Oi! It was the children who told me to answer my phone since it’s distracting our class.”

“Omae! Why you little-“Hiroyuki wasn’t able to finish what he was going to tell to Kamiyama since Takichi got up the sofa and snatched the phone from him.

“Just come,” Takichi said. It was merely a statement or request. It was an order. “And if you happen to come across with Hayato, take him with you also.”

“O-okay. I’ll just ask permission to the principal if I can leave now.”

“Thanks. See you.”

“See you,” Kamiyama bid goodbye before hanging the phone.

And without any warning, Takichi smacked the head of Hiroyuki.

“Ittai! What’s that for?”

“That’s for being impolite and rude towards Kamiyama.”

“And what’s wrong with that? We’re both adults now.”

“He’s still older than you.”

“Okay. Whatever,” Hiroyuki sighed in defeat. “I’m going upstairs. Just call me when everyone is here.”

With that, I knew that I should go now. I got out my room and, surprisingly, saw Yuki leaning against the wall. He was waiting for me.

Yuki is my best friend and my assistant since birth. Whenever I go, one is sure that he is always with me. And whenever I am in trouble, he is always there to back me up or make excuses for me every time I sneak out the gates of heaven and visit the human world. And when I am promoted as an angel-god, he is also promoted but as an angel-minister, a rank lower than mine. Up to now, he does my job when I don’t feel like doing it. Although I am older to him by a year, he acts like a big brother to me.

“The day has come,” he said to me while taking out his hands from his pocket. “Don’t worry; I’ll take charge here.”

“Are you okay with that?” I asked him. I saw from his eyes that he, indeed, wanted also to come. ”Don’t you want to come with me back to the place of the earthlings?”

“What are you saying? I might be a burden to you,” he refused my offer. “And besides, why would I go down?”

“Don’t you want to se-“

“Let us not talk about the past,” he interrupted and shoved me to the hallways until to the gate of the heavens. “And if you have problem, do not hesitate to contact me via telepathy. Gambatte ne.”

I looked at him for the last time. I opened the gates of heaven and the sunlight welcomed me to earth. I jumped off the clouds with my eyes closed, feeling the wind as it passes through me, and landed on the same abandoned building where I came down five years ago.  Snow, it was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes. Winter was starting and it again threatened the heart of the humans to be frozen alone. It was the same as half a decade before. A light covered me as a closed my wings and hide them. My white Grecian dress that angels wear changed into human clothes. My dark brown hair retained its color except for having some lighter brown highlights. My eyes also changed from grey to rich amber. And with that, I transformed into a human again.

I got out the building and walked towards the bus stop where a man in black trenchcoat was waiting for the arrival of the bus going to the district of Katsushika. As I stepped closer, I recognized the young man. Kamiyama Sho. With his outfit, no one could really say that he is a preschool teacher except for those who know about it. He still had those sloping shoulders and big eyes. He indeed looked the same three years ago except his being more mature and respectable. One could mistake him as a news anchor that hosts a show at night. Since he was looking down at his shoes, he did not notice me approaching him. I knew that he was thinking where on earth he could find me after my disappearance in those three hard years. I could read his thoughts and the thoughts of other humans like him. I stopped in front of him, making my shoes visible in his eyes. He instantly lifted his head up and looked at me. I could see the relief in his eyes as soon as his mind registered that I was already in front of him.

“Yo,” I greeted him while lifting my hand to make a wave to him.

“Finally,” he heaved a sigh in relief.

“Eh?” I pretended not knowing anything. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing really,” he said softly and scratched his head. “Seriously, I really don’t know where to find you. It is really my luck to see you in the bus stop. I could see what will happen to me if I did not see you here.”

“Why are you looking for me?” I put my hands inside the pockets of my black burton audex cargo jacket and sat beside him.

“Actually, I am not the one who is looking for you,” he smiled sheepishly. “Takichi-kun just asked me to find you because he wants to talk with us at their house.”

“Really? I am actually going there to pay a visit,” I said which is actually true. Angels, or even some humans, did not know how to lie. It was either we make an excuse or just don’t tell everything. “Did he tell you what he wants to discuss with us?”

“Unfortunately, he didn’t.” He looked up into the sky and watched the snow fall onto the ground. “I wonder how important it is that I need to leave early from school. I guess that it is indeed important.”

“Sometimes,” I began to share my thoughts. “The most important things that humans ignore are the ones that can actually change their lives and make a big difference.”

“You didn’t change,” he looked at me. “You still talk like an angel or whatsoever.”

I just smiled at him and stood up. I am indeed an angel, the angel-god to be precise, I thought while catching a small drop of snow.

“Ne, Hayato-kun,” he called me by my human name. “Where were you for the last three years?”

I did not know how to answer that question. Only three beings knew my existence as an angel disguised as a human; and Yuki, together with my father who is also an angel-god, belonged to that three. “If I say that I came down from the heavens just now, would you believe me?”

“Eh?!” Kamiyama-kun jerked from his seat. “Seriously?!”

“B-A-K-A,” I mouthed to him.

“Mou~,” he said in frustration. “You still like to make fool of me.”

I smirked as the bus arrived. I immediately went up, followed by Kamiyama-kun. I sat at the back beside the window while he sat in front of me. We were both silent and refused to talk. That silence was broken when the cell phone of Kamiyama-kun rang.

He looked at the caller id and irritatingly answered it, “What is it?!”

“Aniki is asking if you’re with Hayato-san,” the other person on the line said with also a pissed voice.

“Yes. He’s with me. We’re on our way there.”

“Faster, old man,” the other person teased Kamiyama before hanging the line.

“Urusai!” Kamiyama closed his eyes as well as his cell phone. “How dare you?!”

The old women sitting opposite to him looked at him intently, making him feel embarrassed.

“Sumimasen,” he apologised while bowing his head really low. I covered my mouth to stop myself from giggling when he looked back at me and glared with his eyes saying what-are-you-laughing-at.

The bus stopped and it was time for us to go down. The snow also stopped falling but it covered completely some of roofs of the houses. Children were throwing snowballs to each other at the park while others were creating their snow masterpieces, the legendary snowmen and snow fortresses. Young couples, perhaps in high school, held the hands of each other or shared gloves and winter coats to warm up the cold day. We walked few blocks away from the bus stop.

“I wonder if she sees the white sky,” Kamiyama sighed.

“Of course, she’s watching it also like everybody else,” I warmly replied with an assurance.

“I guess you’re right.”

Kamiyama tightened up his grey scarf which covers his whole neck and barely hides his face up to his nose while we continued to walk side by side. But no matter how thick our clothing was, it fees like there was someone in the middle of us coldly holding our hands. I ignored that idea and the coldness of the day. I could hardly distinguish the difference of a warm day than that of the cold one.  There was basically no difference for me. I knew it is also for Kamiyama who is just trying to hide and run away everyday, as well for Takichi-san and Hiroyuki-kun.  Without a doubt, I could say that all of us are feeling the same way today, the same unexplainable sorrow and pain. Even God and the other angels could tell that.

And I am not supposed to feel this way. It is like I am humiliating myself as I could hear the young angels from the heavens. One is saying that how I could do such things while others say that I am not equitable for my position for having this. I am relieved when I heard Yuki scolding them and telling me that I must do what I am supposed to do. What could I do? I am the only one who has this among the angels. It is only my luck that the angel-minister and God are on my side.

We stopped walking in front of the house opposite to the restaurant owned by the Miyanos. At that time, it rained snow again. It was colder than earlier. Kamiyama entered the house first while I stayed outside for a while.  The falling snow was gloriously white and divinely pure as it covers the heavens and the earth. Amidst the frosted rain, a white feather fell down from the sky. I removed my hand from my pocket and reached for it.

I felt warm in it like holding her hand.

“Indeed, she’s watching at the sky also,” I bowed my head and looked at my shoes as the snow slowly covers it. “And she is also smiling now.”

I put the feather inside my pocket and bent down to wipe away the snow. I scooped a handful of snow and slowly let if fall from my hands.

“Hey,” a guy called me from the door entrance of the house. It was Miyano Hiroyuki. It caught my attention.

“What are you doing there?” He said while rubbing his hands together to warm up. “Kuso~! It’s cold!”

I laughed at him as he entered inside. I followed him. But before really entering the house, I glanced once again to the sky.
