The first ADA diet I was given actually worked for me when I was diagnosed in 2003. It was such a reduction in carbs from how I had been eating before, and such a reduction in calories (1500), plus I was exercising (walking), so I did well for a a few months, but the weight loss and good blood sugars didn't help my retinopathy (bleeding retinas) at the time and I was going through other dramas, so I got depressed and gave up. I gained all the weight I lost and more.

The pills stopped working in 2004, with the depression and bingeing and all, so I've been on insulin ever since. I try to cover all the carbs I eat, and sometimes that works, but still -- I eat a lot of them, and like I said in the main post, the calories do add up to weight gain.

This new version of ADA I've been given will be lower carb then I've been eating, but way lower protein too. The nurse seems to think people with GP (gastroparesis) can't digest protein. I don't think I've had a problem with it. I know most Type II's on insulin don't have to ( ... )
