Just bring a single change of clothes and write "I don't speak Japanese" on a 3x5 index card in hiragana, and you'll be fine!

That'd be pretty dumb. For one, they're going to already assume she doesn't speak Japanese. Two, she does. Maybe not fluently, but rather well. And if people don't talk to her because they think she doesn't speak Japanese, then she doesn't get a chance to show off.
