“She’s gone, Jack.” Owen spoke as he checked Rose’s pulse one more time. He turned off the monitors and machines behind him before looked at Jack.
Jack laid his hand on Rose’s hair, just as he had the first time she was lying there. He sighed to himself and flicked a strand of hair off Rose’s shoulder. Ianto walked silently down the steps to join Jack. He placed a hand of Jack’s bend back and rubbed his thumb in soft circles. He looked up at Owen who had stopped pacing around the monitors and was standing with his hands on his hips.
Owen watched the pair move away from Rose slightly before speaking. “I’m sorry, but we should tell Chris.” He muttered, waving his hand in the overall direction of Jack’s office, “he needs to know.”
Jack looked up at Owen, nodding his head. He then turned to Ianto before moving away from them and up to his office. Ianto took a final glance at Owen before moving to follow Jack, he was looking around him, not really sure of what to do.
Gwen and Tosh jumped as the door behind them opened. The room had been quiet since Ianto had left. Chris had returned to pacing across the floor. He stopped mid-step and turned on his heel as Jack reached his desk.
Ianto jumped the top step to the main area of the Hub and made for Jack’s office, he got to the doorway and moved no further, watching Chris’s reaction at Jack walking in.
Jack sat in his chair, shifted to a comfortable position as Chris moved to the desk. Jack rested his forearms on the wooden surface and looked up at all the faces surrounding him. “Can we have a minute alone?” Jack spoke quietly but everyone heard.
Gwen and Tosh nodded and Ianto made room for them to pass, he then shut the door behind them and went to make some coffee. Tosh went straight to Owen and Rose, Gwen followed her to the bay but stopped as she saw Rose’s body.
Tosh gasped quietly as she realised why Rose’s body was so still. Gwen covered her mouth and moved beside Tosh and down to Rose. Owen was leaning against the cold wall and watched the girl’s reactions. “I couldn’t do anything.” He spoke to anyone that was listening, Tosh looked up at him giving a knowing smile.
Jack breathed in and out slowly watching Chris sit in the chair opposite him. He waited until Chris was settled before he spoke, “Rose is dead.”
Chris shattered, his shoulders shrugged forwards and he began to shake his head. “No, no she can’t be.” He managed before fisting his hands on the desk and began to cry fully.
Jack stood up pushing his chair back and walked round to where Chris was sitting. Chris watched through red eyes as Jack pulled him up into a hug. “I’m sorry, I really am.” He whispered, looking out into the Hub.
