Last Weekend's Polar Opposite

Aug 04, 2008 11:54

Remember last weekend, when I complained that nothing I had wanted to do came off? Well, that wasn't the problem this weekend. If anything, I packed this weekend too full. Of course, most of that fullness involved sitting in darkened theaters, so I didn't do too much socializing, but still, I can't complain about wasting my weekend!

Giving a best friend the title of emeritus is an interesting, clever idea.

You see a lot of movies.

I'm sure plenty of Eagle Scouts have had a dildo up their ass. And the same goes for Southern Baptists. ;)

I started doing it a few years ago, after Aaron and I were living in separate cites for reasons other than college for the first time. It seemed weird to keep calling him my best friend, since we never hung out and actually rarely spoke to each other all that much, but since he is my oldest friend, I didn't want to demote him. So, I created the emeritus title for him. That way, I could use "best friend" for the person I actually spent the most time hanging out with and talking to. Who knows, now that he's back in town, he may get back to just plain old "best friend".

I do see a lot of movies. It helps when your boyfriend/partner is just as much of a movie buff as you are, and actually works at a theater. However, this weekend, I only saw one movie, and three plays. Given that I had seen Jersey Boys last Tuesday, I think it's safe to say I set a new personal record for Most Live Theater Seen in One Week, which will probably stand until I have enough money to both go to New York and see the 8 or 10 shows I'd want to see while ( ... )

House & Garden sounds like a brilliant theatrical idea.

I hope that you enjoy Pygmalion. Perhaps it would be good to hear the original Shaw without the music.

I have several Best Friends Emeritus. I wish some of them hadn't "retired" from the active role of Best Friends. But people move on to new locations and new stages in their lives.

Cheers,

Bruce

The plays were really clever, though the productions have drawn mixed reviews from the local press. Everyone praised the acting, directing, scenic design, and sheer audacity to attempt the productions, but a couple of critics thought that the gimmick took away from the plays, particularly in House, where a major plotline from Garden that had not even been mentioned yet in House spilled over, with no real explanation as to what was going on. I really enjoyed both plays, however.

Pygmalion was actually done last fall, and I did enjoy it, though since I've never seen the straight version before, and had seen My Fair Lady a couple of times on stage (not to mention the movie), it seemed strange that no one broke out in song. Honestly, I decided I liked the musical better.

I could probably label a few other people "emeritus", but I'm going to reserve that title for Aaron alone, even if he eventually reclaims the outright title of "best friend".
