Happy Fastnacht Day!

For those of you wondering what I'm talking about, here is a condensed version:

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (which is this Wednesday).  Normally, Lent is a time of fasting or denial of some kind, in an effort to focus on religion, to honor and come a smidgen closer to empathizing with Christs Lenten journey.  Anyway, this fasting led to the many ( Read more... )

Very cool! I have to say, I'm surprised to hear that the PA Dutch practice Lent. But that's because the religion I was brought up avoided anything that smacked of Catholicism (roll with it, I didn't say it made sense), and the old order Brethren live very much like the PA Dutch. I actually only HEARD of Lent from a Catholic friend in 2nd grade.

At least, that's what we called them in Frankfurt. And yes, Bill, that *is* Frankfurter Schlappmaul.

They're otherwise known as "berliner" (though not in Berlin) or Krapfen. We'd dunk em in sugar, and even fill them with jelly. But they were always so good!

YUM!

I totally remember Fastnacht. Although, we called it Fasching too. We'd go out to the parades and catch candy and yay, good times.
