How do I boost MKV/h264 performance?

OK, all you AV types, your help would be appreciated.

I grabbed an anime in h264 at 720p resolution, but it's lagging the video pretty noticeably at many points, others are artifacting or just breaking up a few frames going forward.

Anyone know how I can fix this? I'm running The Core Media Player or VLC Player with the latest CCCP and FFDShow

what speed is your HDD it might not have the thoughput to do full h.264 with out buffering...
