Was it a desperate attempt to escape your family? That was my reasoning...and I wanted to experience a different part of the country.

I didn't go about it like you did, but here's my two cents:

Home is only a 6-hour plane ride away from anywhere in the USA.

What if you were in a slower plane, and what about connections and layovers? What if there's a weather delay? What about an act of God?
