1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

You know, I followed the instructions exactly. I reached for the nearest book. I opened the book to p123, found the fifth sentence, began reading on and thought...crap.

It's Nabokov's 'King, Queen, Knave' which could be porn, but I haven't read it yet. I was tempted to reach for the next nearest book, which might have had an amazingly eloquent and dazzling paragraph of prose on p123, but I'm an obedient girl and translated Russian smut is what you get.

Ach, not really a fan of Nabokov, although like 99% of people I've only read Lolita, so maybe I'm being a little premature. I just found the whole thing rather frustrating - an obviously talented writer, but a main character too self-absorbed and whiney to empathise with.

Just finished Heart of Darkness. It was bostin'. Soooo well written. And so nice to read a short book for a change!

Not a fan of Nabokov? As an intense Nabokovophile(?) I have to know why you don't like him. Humbert Humbert was a bit pathetic, but that was the point, no?, and I found that part of him hilarious. I'm almost finished with Laughter in the Dark, which is an early book of his that apparently he wasn't so fond of, but which I'm really enjoying.

Heart of Darkness..is that Conrad? (See how badly read I am for an English student) Apocalpse Now keeps coming into my head. Was it based on that book?

And I am supremely happy today because fat, racist chav at work has quit! and I wasted more time than usual avoiding middle managers and actual work. Supreme!
