Summary: He finds refuge now in a brief piece of memory.

In the aftermath, he finds that he can allow himself to think of trivial things. The shards and slivers of broken glass keep falling from the window-frame, spiraling down around his shoulders like silver birds crashing, like sharp-edged falling eagles. If he doesn't take care, his vision is full of the shattering that he can't seem to shake. So he immerses himself in trivial things.

He remembers her uncertainty, her kind eyes; he remembers the sweet feeling when she held onto him, even if it was only to keep from falling off the vehicle. The girl he met in the sick bay was so different from the fiery warrior he saw later as she battled in her robot-spirit. But thinking of her then makes him think of a slender young man in the most fantastic mecha this boy has ever had the privilege to repair. And that thought shakes a fresh shard of glass from the window-frame, and it falls in a bright streak to shatter at his feet.

Somehow he feels that if all these left-over pieces fall away, maybe then everything inside him will be clean and he can start to heal. But it hurts too much to pay attention to cleaning up and cleaning out, and every slender fair-haired young man on the crew fills his heart with grief too immense to look at.

So instead of shaking free the glass, he closes his eyes and remembers those cranberry eyes, that red hair, the side of her he saw when she was quiet and unsure and clung to him because he was the only one there. The side of her he wants to remember. One of his few pieces of memory that doesn't hurt now.
