It was pretty good. I'm not saying "awesome" but pretty good.
Even though I usually like epically long movies, this one did feel like it did drag on a bit at times and I think if they cut out 20 - 30 minutes the pace would've been better. I felt that a couple bits dragged as well (mostly scenes that didn't keep strictly to the book). Especially the parts with goblins and stone giants.

I'm surprised people are complaining about the light-heartedness, too.

What really made the movie for me was the cast (just as excellent as it was with LotR), and the fact that they nailed almost all the crucial scenes from the book. The "good morning" scene was PERFECT, as was the entire sequence with Bilbo and Gollum. Ahhh. So happy!

I dislike 3D, too, but coupled with 48 fps, it worked splendidly! I really don't see why people dislike 48 fps. Maybe it's as you say--we're used to video game clips.

Sad thing is, I'm already pining for the next movie. XD

I know, I wanna know what happens next (haven't read the book although I guess most crucial plot points are known through LotR anyway xD).
I wonder if I should see the movie again in 2D 24fps for comparison's sake...
