In which I write about a random assortment of maybe disconnected things

Here's a strange thought for the day. I was perusing a bookstore this morning, and found about a dozen books that I wanted to read. Then I remembered that I have to go to work today, and thought to myself, "I can't wait until I retire". Seriously. I feel like I could read all ( Read more... )

see now what i think you really mean by saying you want to retire is not so much that you want one foot in the grave. i think what you mean to say is i wish i were independently wealthy because then you could choose to do whatever you wanted with your time. then you wouldn't *have* to work, you know? see i think everyone just says retire because it's easier to conceptualize because well all of our parents will retire some day. but being independently wealthy is reserved for such a small percentage of the population it doesn't occur to us. ;) (i know this because i have been saying that for years now :-p ( ... )

Being independently wealthy sure would help! It would take some of the pressure off at least. Still, there is still the question of finding meaning and purpose in life. And I would say that if I've done meaningful purposeful contributing-to-society things for 70 years of my life, that would be enough. Then I could stop and take a break and just watch the world and do self-absorbed things. In that sense, no amount of money can help you out. Sure, you may have more freedom to find a job where you can be happy and contribute meaningful things.. but you'd still have to work! So in that sense, I don't mind working, but at the same time, I occasionally *do* think about what it would be like to be seventy, and just be done with that. At the end of the line. Maybe I'm just in a weird mood though.
