I guess it depends on what constitutes "community." As a kid I volunteered at a nursing home. It was a very educational experience, and I was pretty shocked by how the staff treated the patients. It left me with very strong views about the importance of respectful health care for everyone, especially the elderly ( ... )

It depends on what is defined as community. The neighbourhood that I live in is solely for sleeping. I don't know my neighbours, nor do I care to.
The place I spend all my time is the university I attned/work at. I'm involved in a couple of different groups at the University, that organize events, and work on getting a community feeling at a remote school (York University).
Most of it is based in the department that I'm affiliated with- partly because it looks great on the CV to show involvement in the department, and it's great for networking with prof. and other professionals in my field, but I also know how hard it is to meet other students at a commuter school, and as a mature student I'd like to help younger students find my subject more accessible, and also find meeting people more accessible.

Over the years I have done all sorts of volunteer work. I am currently working with an Aids Network. I help to plan their yearly fundraiser Friends for Life Bike Rally. Needless to say I love it. I am the events and social co-chair. I plan launch parties, girls night out, Jersey try on socials. Nightly activities during the ride as well as the parties at the end upon arriving to Montreal.

The benefits for me, is that I get to help and it's something exciting outside of my current position at work. The ride is a challenge and I get to stay in shape.

the benefits for the community is that we raise over a million dollars for PWA which helps people in our community who are have HIV/Aids.
