She stood gaping after him as he walked toward the door. She wanted to scream, cry, run after him, throw herself at his feet and beg him not to go, but she could not move. She couldn’t even breathe. If it wasn’t for the pounding in her chest and the swimming thoughts in her head, she would have thought she had been turned to stone, no longer a flesh and blood woman, but a statue caught in an eternal scream of anguish.
When he reached the door, his hand seemed to hesitate over the doorknob and she watched intently, hoping, praying with all her soul that he was having second thoughts, that he had changed his mind about leaving
But he hadn’t. His hand turned the knob and the door swung open, letting in a cool gust of air that seemed to bring her suddenly back to life.
As he stepped over the threshold, she found her breath and her voice and her body lunged into motion. She called out his name and rushed three steps forward before he cut her off cold in her tracks.
Without turning around to face her, he lifted his hand motioning for her to stop, freezing her in place once again. “Don’t,” he ordered. “I need more time.”
With that the door shut behind him and she collapsed to the floor, her body racked with sobs. How could this be happening? No. He couldn’t be leaving her. This was their life and he was her whole world. What had she done?
She cried until she was out of tears then lay crumbled on the floor breathing ragged breaths. His last words echoed in her mind, “more time.”
She wiped her tears from her cheeks and pulled herself up to a sitting position. “He just needs time, that’s all,” she told herself. If she gave him time and space, he would forgive her. He would come back. It wasn’t over yet.
She repeated those words over and over in her mind. “It’s not over yet.” And if it wasn’t over yet and if there was still a chance, she could carry on.
