I think I had better write down a semi-coherent version of my impressions of the Opening Ceremonies before time erodes my memory of them too much, so here goes:

Longer Version of My Impressions of the Opening Ceremonies )

olympics: fencing, olympics, olympics: opening ceremonies, olympics: men's gymnastics, olympics: beach volleyball

I watched the fencing while at lunch. Totally wouldn't have predicted that!

I hope the men's gymnastics makes it to the finals. Winning a bronze would be awesome :D

I had no idea we were such a fencing powerhouse! The three of them were just on with Bob Costas and they expect to win the team event. I hope I get to watch.

I'd love to see the U.S. team in the finals as well. I think they've got a pretty tough battle ahead of them. But everyone, even the Chinese, seem to be making some mistakes so far, so maybe it's not out of the question.

We aren't.

The medal she won in Athens was the first one in decades (many, many decades). Neat to see the change!

As for gymnastics, the general consensus is that our gold chances went bye-bye when Paul pulled out. Silver went away with Morgan. It's likely going to be China-gold, Japan-silver with bronze way up in the air.

I have to admit, I'd almost like to see Japan win gold just to send China into an epileptic fit XD

Yes, very neat!

I guess we are mainly competing with the Russians for the bronze, right? I'm not sure who else is a contender.

Ahahahahahahaha!

After just having watched the Chinese men in the qualifying round, I think their head coach's brain would explode if that happened. They had a comparatively fantastic day today, with just one fairly major mistake that they can toss out, and despite how well they did, he looked like he was going to be sick. I'm sure the pressure on him and the gymnasts is pretty intense.

I tried to stay awake until the end but I couldn't... I barely stayed up until Korean team made their entrance and I went to bed. *g*
