It was raining, and it was so, so cold. The wind was merciless that day. The day Sungmin went to his mother and brother's funeral. He still couldn't remember who they were. He felt so empty inside. He felt like he didn't have an identity. The woman who cared for him in the hospital, continued staying by his side. He didn't mind. He didn't hate it, but he didn't appreciate it either. He thought she was just wasting her time. Why do you stay? Don't you know that I don't care? He thought bitterly.

Being told that it was his mother and brother in the caskets, Sungmin didn't bat an eyelid. He felt ashamed. It was his own family he was watching.

"The poor child...," he heard someone whisper. He ignored it. He didn't think of himself as poor. He didn't think of himself as anything.

"He's not crying! Doesn't he have a heart?" he heard another one exclaim. He was also confused. He didn't understand why he didn't feel sad. He didn't know if he had a heart or not, just that it couldn't feel any emotion.

Watching his mother and brother's caskets being lowered into a trench, he wanted to say goodbye. They deserved at least that. But when he opened his mouth, he still couldn't say anything. He frowned. He felt frustrated, never being able to say anything. The woman caressed his face. He knew she understood what he wanted to do. She always did.

As the funeral started to come to an end, the woman started to lead Sungmin away. It was time to go home anyway. Sungmin didn't think of it as a home though, just a place to stay for the moment.

He took one last look at the caskets of his mother and brother, and got into a car with the woman.

~
During the car ride "home", Sungmin started to feel a little queasy. Shifting in his seat, he tried to ignore the feeling. After ten minutes though, he knew that he wasn't going to be able to hold it in. He rolled open the window and tried to take in some fresh air. Unfortunately, some foul smell came in when the car passed a construction site, and Sungmin accidentally breathed it all in. He felt even worse.

Quickly rolling the window closed, he leaned on the side of the car, trying to go to sleep, but the sudden shakes and jerks of the car prevented him from escaping the nausea. He closed his eyes, trying his best to ignore the interruptions. Just then, the car hit a rather nasty speed bump, and Sungmin slammed his head into the car window. He groaned in pain, rubbing the side of his head.

Noticing the commotion, the woman looked over at Sungmin. "Are you feeling ok?"

He shook his head, glaring at the lady. Still rubbing his head, he looked away, faking admiration of the outside scenery.

She started to seem concerned. "Are you feeling sick? Did you hurt yourself?"

He couldn't believe how oblivious she was to the events prior to asking. No, I feel like it's the best day ever, he thought sarcastically.

She gently rested her hand on top of his head, an effort to comfort him. Sungmin flinched. Even he'd been with her for two weeks now, he still wasn't that used to the way she touched his head. The car suddenly shook again, and his hands flew to his mouth and stomach. She started to pet him.

"You're feeling carsick, aren't you?"

Sungmin decided to give up. He felt terrible, and he definitely wasn't in the mood to refuse help. Slowly turning his head, he looked at the woman and nodded his head. She smiled at his response. Is he finally warming up to me?

She took out a plastic bag from her purse and gave it to Sungmin. "Here. You can use this bag if you feel the urge to throw up. I prepared just in case something like this happened."

He stared at the bag, surprised. He didn't know the woman cared this much for him. To the point where she thinks about me when I'm not even there? He always thought that she had some kind of reason for taking him in; selfish reasons.

The woman moved the bag a little. "Go on. Take it. You might need it."

Sungmin slowly stuck out his hand, and when he grabbed the bag, he froze. What was he supposed to do now?

The woman chuckled at his awkwardness. "Whenever I feel nauseous, I always find that sleeping is the best solution."

Sungmin laughed on the inside. Hah. I've already tried that.

She continued, "I saw you trying to sleep before, so I assume you must know what I'm talking about. It must have hurt when your head hit the door, didn't it?"

Sungmin's eyes widened. She saw that? I guess she's not as oblivious as she seems.

The woman patted her arm, an invitation for him to sleep there. "If you want, you can rest your head on my arm. It's not exactly the best pillow around, but I'm sure it'll do for the moment," she smiled.

He looked at her arm. He had to admit, her arm did look very comfortable.

She leaned on to her side and patted her arm again. "Don't worry, I don't mind."

Sungmin slowly moved towards her, and put his head on her arm. It did feel good. And just like that, his carsickness disappeared. He looked up at the woman, and she gave him a reassuring smile again.

"See? It's not so bad, right?"

Sungmin slightly nodded, his eyelids feeling heavy. Closing them, he drifted into a very deep sleep.

The woman sighed, "I'm glad to see that you're finally accepting me, Sungmin."

~
Sungmin opened his eyes. The room he was in seemed vaguely familiar. Rubbing his eyes, he noticed his surroundings. He gasped. Wh- what is this place? Why am I he-

"Chunhwa! Chunhwa! Don't go! Please! Chunhwa!" someone loudly cried out.

Sungmin's eyes widened. Chunhwa? Why does that name seem so familiar?

He saw a man in the room, looking very sad and exhausted. Then a woman came into the room. She ran to him and fell to her knees, clutching his pants with a death-grip. Sungmin squinted to get a good look at her. He didn't know her, but yet at the same time, felt like she was someone important.

"Chunhwa! Please, don't leave me here all alone! I can't live without you!" she clawed at his knees.

Sungmin's father looked her with an expression of regret. "I'm sorry, but I can't do this anymore. I can't handle it. It's too much. I have to go before I do something I regret."

Shaking her off, he walked towards the door. She couldn't move, shocked by his answer. She shook her head, pushing away the confusion, and yelled out his name in a desperate attempt to get him to stop walking.

"Chunhwa!"

Opening the door, he turned around. "This is probably the last time you will ever see me again, so goodbye, forever." He turned back around, and walked out, the door closing behind him.

Sungmin didn't understand. He didn't know why he was here, or why he was with these people. He felt confused. The woman fell to the floor from her knees. She started to tremble. Rocking herself, back and forth, she whispered to herself that it was "just a dream. Just a dream." And that nothing was real.

Sungmin walked over to her and tried to comfort her. "Um, are you ok? Do you need help?" Then Sungmin gasped. When did he get the ability to talk again?

She didn't respond, and continued staying in the fetal position. Sungmin tried to touch her shoulder, but when his hand went through her, he started to feel scared. Where am I? Why am I like this? Why can't anyone see me?

Looking around, he spotted an open door, and himself standing under it. What? Why am I seeing myself? Wh- What's happening to me?

Sungmin ran over to himself. He waved his hand in his own face and jumped up and down. "Hey! Can you see me? I'm you! Please, tell me you can see me!"

But there was no response again. He tried to grab himself, but his hands went through himself . Sungmin started to cry. "Why doesn't anyone see me?"

He suddenly thought about the man that just left. Wait, maybe he can help me. Maybe he can see me.

He ran after the man. Opening the door, he shielded his eyes from the very bright lights in front of him. "Hello? Is anyone out there?" He walked further, and the whiteness engulfed him. "Ah!"

~
Sungmin flew up from his bed, covered in sweat and panting. He looked around. He didn't recognize the room he was in. Then the door suddenly opened, and the woman walked in again, holding a towel. She went over to his side and used the towel to wipe his sweat away.

She pet his head. "So you're awake now, huh? After we got home, you were still sleeping, and I didn't want to wake you; you just seemed so tired. So I carried you up here, and tucked you into bed."

He looked at her, seemingly surprised at her kind acts again.

She chuckled. "I heard a scream from your room and I figured you had a nightmare, which is why I brought the towel."

Sungmin nodded, confirming her assumption. So that was a dream. No wonder no one could see me.

She continued, "So, what were you dreaming about?"

Sungmin whimpered. He didn't want to talk about the traumatizing event.

She rubbed his back, trying to coax him into tell her. "I can't help if you won't tell me."

Sungmin tried to make a sound, but as usual, nothing came out. He was still mute. He groaned in frustration.

The woman smiled. "I guess you can tell me later, when you can speak again."

He shrugged. How does she know if I'll speak in the future? I might never be able to speak again.

She gave him a hug, and got up to walk away. "I'll be making dinner now. I'll tell you when it's ready, so you can continue sleeping, if you'd like."

Sungmin nodded, and fell back on to his bed. He closed his eyes, and fell asleep again.

~
The smell of food woke Sungmin up. Getting out of bed, he opened the door and started to walk downstairs. The apartment the woman lived in wasn't exactly the best, but it wasn't the worst either. He wandered into the kitchen, looking for the woman.

"Oh?" a voice called out from behind him.

Sungmin flinched, scared by the sudden noise. He whirled around and saw the woman.

She laughed at his actions, thinking it was cute. "Well, I see you're awake now. I was going to go wake you before, but I guess I don't have to do that now." She smiled at him.

Sungmin nodded in agreement. When the woman started to walk away, he followed, not knowing what else to do. She walked to the living room and sat down on the sofa. He sat down next to her. Looking in front of himself, he noticed that there was food on the table. He started to drool.

Seeing this, the woman chuckled. "Go ahead," she offered, handing him a plate and a fork, "Take some. I made it for you anyway."
Feeling quite embarrassed, he quickly took the plate and fork, and started to put the food on his plate. The woman watched him as he started to eat, waiting for his reaction to her food. She started to feel a bit anxious.

"So, um, how is it? Does it taste good?" she asked.

Sungmin looked at her, and after a long pause, he smiled at her. She gasped. It was the first time she saw him smile.

She grinned back in reply. "I'm taking that as a yes." Sungmin nodded, and continued eating. He felt really hungry, so he was glad that she had made dinner.

The woman took a plate for herself, and started to eat as well. And although they were both silent for the entire time they ate, there was a feeling of contentment wafting around the apartment. After they finished dinner, the woman started to clean up.

Turning to look at Sungmin, she asked, "Do you want some dessert? I have some ice cream in the fridge."

Sungmin's eyes brightened up. The woman laughed at his excitement.

"So does that mean you want some?" she offered, and he nodded eagerly.

Then she walked over to the refrigerator, and opened the freezer, checking for what flavors she had.

She called out to him, "I only have cookies and cream, or chocolate chip. Which one do you want?"

Hearing no response, she face-palmed. Of course he can't say anything; he's mute! Duh, she sighed.

She went back outside to see what he wanted.

"So, which one do you want?" she asked.

Sungmin shrugged. He didn't really have a favorite because he didn't eat ice cream often.

"Hmm," she pondered. "Want me to surprise you?"

He nodded. Then she went back into the kitchen to retrieve the ice cream. She decided that she would give him cookies and cream. It was her favorite flavor anyway. After putting the ice cream into a bowl, she carried it out and handed it over to Sungmin.

"Here you go," she smiled.

He took the bowl and started to eat the ice cream. At first bite, Sungmin instantly loved it. He quickly finished the bowl, and rested against the sofa, sighing in contentment. The woman was surprised. She did not expect this kind of reaction.

She giggled, "I guess you really liked that flavor."

He merely grinned back in response. Then the woman took the bowl and all the other dishes back into the kitchen to wash. Watching her walk away, Sungmin felt very grateful towards the woman. He was grateful because she helped him during a time of great pain and confusion. Because she cared for him when he had no one. Because she loved him without expecting anything in return. And most of all, he was grateful, because she never gave up on him. Thank you for being so kind after all this time...
