S O R R Y
The blood was hot against his skin, burning him like he was on fire. It oozed between his fingers, and drip drip drip rolled off of his hand, gathering at the tapered tip of each finger. His heart was like a small bird in his chest, fluttering in the cage of his ribs. He could feel the blood pumping through his body, the throb of it passing through his arms and legs. His chest burned for air, telling his paralyzed lungs to just breathe in--
He took a shaking, gasping breath, his lips trembling as the suddenly too-hot air passed between his lips. His teeth ached as it brushed against them, sending the throbbing pain through his jaw and deep into his skull. His throat was raw and dry, and the air rasped as it moved into his lungs. He still burned for air; breathing didn't help.
Fuck, he was crying. The thin droplets formed across the edge of his eyelids; they blurred his vision, so that the sight before him wavered in and out of focus. He was almost glad, as the sight of Naruto's wide face, blood leaking like tears from his eyes, passed from his vision. The scene would be forever burned into his mind. He didn't need anyone to tell him that.
The blue of his irises were dim and lacking the usual light that lingered there. His skin was too pale, his lips swollen and blood oozing from his mouth. He was still alive, barely clinging to life, as death lurked just over his shoulder.
Damn it, it wasn't supposed to have ended this way. None of this should have happened.
Sasuke was trembling, nerves twitching like a live wire. With a quick thrust, he pulled against Naruto's body, his arm sliding out to the blonde's chest in a sick, wet sound. He stumbled backwards, the blood suddenly leaking out of his body. It poured down his jacket like a wine stain, like ink.
"Naruto," he gasped soundlessly, his mouth working uselessly.
"It's okay," the blond said, his eyes wide and bright with unshed tears. "I... hope you have it now, that thing you need so much," he said weakly. His knees hit the dry ground, a cloud of dust marking his descent.
"Naruto," Sasuke said again, the tears stinging at his dark eyes. This wasn't supposed to have happened! He choked back a sob and leaned over the other boy, whole body cold and hot and shaking. He wanted to tell him that it wasn't worth it. He wanted to tell him that Naruto's life was a price that was too high to pay. The words wouldn't come, though, and so he sank to his knees beside the dying form of his best friend. Only one word would form on his lips, and he breathed it in a long rasp. "Why?"
Naruto smiled, the blood cracking over his skin. He eyes were shining, and a hard knot formed in his stomach. "You bastard," he said. He laughed, and blood spattered on his lips. His eyes slid to a close and he fell forward. Sasuke caught him and Naruto was burning hot against his arms. "Because I love you," he said in a breath, and then he exhaled and was still.
Sasuke trembled as he held the corpse in his arms, a hollow ache blooming in his chest. He suddenly felt cold, as though something had died within him, and the ice would never thaw. His eyes were hot, though, burning with a hard ache inside his skull. He knew the sensation, though he had never experienced it himself, and he quickly covered his eyes with his hands.
He would have gouged them with a kunai, but what good what it have done?
With a groan, he pitched forward and retched, breakfast falling against the ground in a foul-smelling puddle. The tears rolled down his cheeks, and his shoulders shook in agony. Naruto lay beside him, the blood still flowing around him, soaking into the parched earth and turning it black. Sasuke cried out wordlessly, unable to contain his suppressed grief. He fell onto the ground next to Naruto, the dry, hot dirt scratching his cheek.
Everything was hot around him, but he was still unbearably cold inside. And he knew, deep down inside, that he always would be.

End Notes: I live for the moment, I guess. Or at least I live to write the moment.
It's so hard to believe it's 2006 already.
