Just saw a movie called "Let the Right One In". If you were ever picked on in school, this movie sure has an interesting twist on that theme. A little boy named Oskar befriends the girl next door, Eli, and she has some interesting qualities. Never seems to get cold, only comes out at night, and never seems to eat. The movie is pretty visually, ( Read more... )

The book the film was based on, John Ajvide Lindqvist's young adult novel, "Let the Right One In", was on the honor list for the James Tiptree Award this year - for works that explor and expand gender roles in science fiction and fantasy. I just saw that information earlier today. I've not seen the film nor read the book, but now I definitely want to check out the book - according to the book, Eli is a man - did you get any sense of that from the film?

Actually, yes, they were rather ambiguous on her gender-----she kept saying she wasn't a girl. I found myself wondering if she meant she was definitely a boy or was making an enigmatic reference to the fact that she was a vampire.

It didn't come across as that clear-cut to me. I still had some uncertainty as to her gender. There were a couple of notes she wrote to Oskar in the film, but they were in Swedish and I had no translation, so it may have been in there and I couldn't translate it.

And here I recc'd it and haven't even seen it yet! lol
Glad you enjoyed it, marm.

I was at the Comic Con this weekend and was thinking of you. Thanks again for getting me hooked on BSG! I met Edward James Olmos and Kandyse McClure yesterday. I was missing you, though. Maybe some other time we can get together for some more fandom sharing.

Oh! And I found some fabric for that project I mentioned. It's from IKEA. Will send you an email about it.

Hope you're feeling better.*hugs*

Ooo, I hope you got pics from the Con! I bet it was cool. So where was Tahmoh?

Let me know about that fabric, I'm curious.

*hugs*

I've seen the film and read the book and like almost always, I very much preferred the book. The book's much more complex and ambigious, mixing up the atmosphere and things!

I was quite surprised to notice that the movie was advertised so heavily when I was in London. I think I also saw the book translated into English in Foyles, so you'd might be interested to read it.

The minimalism you described seemed very typical of Swedish/Nordic style to me. The wintery suburb of Sweden must be quite exotic scenery for horror to a bunch of international fans.
