I can't decide if the opposite of love is hate, or apathy.

It's apathy. Hate is just love frustrated in its expression, and then complicated by being projected to things peripheral or entirely unrelated to the actual object of enamorment.

I agree. Apathy is a hole (or worse, a void) where at least something used to be-- hate is the soul turned inward and eating the person, and then leaping zealously to another. Apathy is a silent murderer.
