Yes, the world renowned Sapporo Snow Festival is the very reason we were here again this year (or rather I ‘engineered’ the trip back to Hokkaido)! For seven days starting the second week of February, rows of small and large snow statues and ice cravings will be on display at three sites of Sapporo City, namely Odori Park, Susukino Site and Satorando Site during the festival. Over 2,000,000 visitors come to the festival every year, surprisingly we don’t feel being squashed or had to elbow our way around when we were there, in fact there were lots of space to maneuver and take pictures! And the best part of it, its free entry… …people just come, enjoy themselves and leave with fond memories! This must be their winning formula as they are already into their 59th year!
We visited the 3 sites over 2 days with Satorando Site as our first stop. We had intended to spend only ½ a day there so that we could spend more time at the Odori Park, the biggest of the 3 and the main site of the festival. But how wrong we were as the many activities at Satorando had us exhausted almost a day there!
That evening we had a crab feast for our reunion dinner (as it was CNY eve) and ate ourselves silly that we literally didn’t touch or want to see any more crabs for the last of our trip. We wrapped up our day with a stroll through Susukino where the ice cravings are best seen in the night with all the colourful lighting.
