Just taking a break from some math and by some strange sort of miracle found some episodes of the generally highly esteemed Firefly online (without having to go through any dodgy looking sites). Good Lord but it's mediocre. At first I thought it was terrible but then I remembered I'd sat through all six episodes of the BBCs sci-fi series 'Outcasts ( Read more... )

I too found Firefly mediocre (I tend to say it would have been improved by removing the men and substituting them with actual plots) but I did love Babylon 5. At least at the time. :-) I think in retrospect (not having seen them in years) some of the individual episodes, especially at the start, could be clunky and cliched, but some later ones were great. (Season 5 was a mixed bag, for sort of show-external reasons.) And with B5 the effect was always intended to be cumulative.

I've only watched the first episode of Firefly and already I'm getting a 'too clever by half' vibe. Don't get me wrong, I do think the basic setting is interesting and Original enough. Yet in spite of having all that and more in its favour (the acting is fine, the effects are pretty good, the script is a little cringey but that's personal taste), there's something that is really putting me off - I'll probably be able to articulate it better when I've actually watched the whole series (and maybe I'd've changed my mind by then!)
