Gah that sucks!!! I keep hearing about "laws" banning pit bulls, and it's upsetting because my Lucy is part pit bull (and looks the part, especially in her build), and there's no way in hell I'd get rid of her. So you go on with your dog-lovin' self and fight! I've read a lot on pit bulls, especially since Lucy kept getting bigger and revealed herself to be something other than the Jack Russell terrier mix we thought she was, and I have absolute confidence in the breed. Bans like this are just stupid. If I can think of any resources or ideas, I'll pass them along. And encouragement -- you got it!!
Yup. Jim's family raised them when he was growing up. Does your Lucy love the kiddos? Buffy ADORES morgie. lol They are like best friends. Actualy, if you ask her who her best friend is she will say "Brent and Buffy." lol
They are the idea dog for me. So lovely and cuddly. (so long as you don't mind being cuddled by 90 lbs of dog. lol)
The funny thing is, my former dog, Spirit (a keshound) WOULD worry me. She was a good dog, but...not good with kids, or strangers. Her biting someone wouldn't have shocked me at all. Where as I can't picture buffy biting ANYONE (though she does chew. lord. There is no force so destrutive as a teathing pit bull puppy)

Pitts are not my favorite breed, I will admit. I like big HAIRY dogs, middle size hairy dogs... don't especially like Rotties (Kevin's favorite breed) but do not support breed-specific regs. ANY dog can bite. ANY dog can be ill-tempered and who knows why? My Nox is not a people-dog, despite my efforts to help socialize her. I don't know what her background was.
The problem is not the dogs, it's the irresponsible PEOPLE who sometimes own them.. those that don't care for them (at the best case) or those who abuse or get them for illegal purposes (dogfighting) or don't understand training for protection. People are the whole problem.
But we can't make breed specific PEOPLE laws.. that was thrown out with civil rights changes. Not suggesting civil right for critters but there are threads it might go that way eventually. Just that if the cruelty, abandonment, leash... etc... other rational laws were enforced they wouldn't need to consider breed specific. It doesn't really solve the problem and is a "lazy solution" in my book.

heh. I used to like hairy too. But there is something SOOO nice about a non-sheddy dog. No dog hair everywhere! and she is so soft and silky. Plus, MUCH better on Jim's alergies

yes, I agree that short hair dogs are easier to live with. Add in 6 cats and "protopup" protokitty" patrol is a major undertaking. Thankfully we don't have carpets!
Maybe the local cops (do you have municipal officers, or are you served by the county) just getting extra in-service training in animal issues might help? Might be a "local" animal group that would donate that training, maybe??
I trust little dogs that I don't know less than I do big ones. THEY have something to prove Big ones, in my experience, are more willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, give you a sniff and just WATCH...
What do they do about dogs that are PART pit? How much is too much? you say Buffy LOOKS purebred, can you prove that she isn't? Or more to the point, can they prove that there wasn't another kind of bulldog in the woodpile somewhere back?? What about one that isn't but looks the part? That "rule" has so many loopholes... I think you can hang them in it.

actually, maybe not anymore: http://www.straight.com/content.cfm?id=11583
ok, it looks like the rules were changed to exclude specific breeds http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/LICANDINSP/animalcontrol/owningapet/bylaws.htm
but the suggestion may be a useful tool for you.

Thank you!
(and, I'd settle for a muzzle regulation. Not the best solution but it'd be somthing)
