I hope that trick works. Old-style dimmers (basically rheostats) don't work with CFCs at all. 70s-era dimmers (triacs or Silicon Controlled Rectifiers) have a history of blowing out with a fluorescent load.

Works fine.
I installed the dimmer as a cfc-friendly dimmer last year, since the one in place when we moved in had no off switch (just dim to 0) and regularly had the plastic knob fall off.
