/Did you get them?/
Danny tucked the phone against his shoulder as he held up the envelope containing what he assumed was his late Christmas present, “Them?”
His mom sighed, /Open the envelope, Danny./
“How do you even know I got the envelope? I could have been calling to say hi to you and mama,” Danny said with a smirk, “Just like I do every Saturday to let you know I made it through another week of Steve’s ultimate on-going trial by fire.”
/Don’t sass me Daniel./
Danny gulped. He hated it when people used his full name. It didn’t matter if it was the Governor or his parents, “Yes ma’am and I am opening the envelope now.” He slit the flap and pulled out the gaudy card his mama had to have picked out. She had this thing about searing his eyeballs with the most offensive cards she could find and had been doing so ever since he turned sixteen. His mom on the other hand liked to attempt to make him laugh, an easy feat since he had her sense of humor.
He opened the card and nearly dropped it and the phone in his shock, “M-mom? You…I…”
His mom’s chime like laughter echoed through the phone, /We thought you could take Grace, show her what real football is like when the best play against the best, you know? And we threw in an extra if you wanted to take someone else along too./
She didn’t say it, but the Steve was definitely implied in that ‘someone else.’ He sighed and wondered if a time would come when his moms couldn’t read his mind, “Sure ma. This is awesome! I did some looking into ticket prices when they first announced the pro-bowl. They ain’t cheap.”
/Eh, your uncles helped. Dave said it’s not fair for you to be down there and miss a pro-bowl. He and Mike were going to fly down for it and to see you and Grace, but Mike lost his vacation because of a new contract. They are going to come down with your mama and me for Grace’s birthday./
Danny laughed. Yeah, that sounded like his uncles, “Okay, ma. I’m gunna get off then and call Rachel. Make sure everything is squared away.”
/Okay, honey. Give my grandbaby a kiss for me when you see her and one for your mama too…I told him Elle, stop slapping me...We love you baby./
“Love you both too,” Danny pulled his cell away from his ear and hit end call. He glanced at the tickets and sighed as he slid through his contacts for Rachel’s number.

A week and a half before the pro-bowl and Danny still had not given Steve the other ticket. Though, truthfully, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to wait and give it to him when Steve came over for both of the championship games on Sunday. The Jets/Steelers game was going to be a grudge match between the two of them, as Steve had this thing about cheering for the opposite team as him…and Danny was all about the Jets. It would make a nice feel better gift when the Jets slaughtered the Steelers, but…Danny looked towards Steve’s office.
Steve had been in a weird mood since Mary had left back to Los Angeles. Danny looked down at the tickets spread out on his desk and sighed. He stood up and grabbed the ticket, before heading out of his office and over to Steve’s. He tapped on the glass door and watched as Steve looked up at him with a frown. Not so much of a surprise, because Danny rarely knocked, but he liked to keep his partner off kilter.
When he received permission to enter, Danny opened the door and stepped into the office with his hands held behind his back. Steve cocked an eyebrow, “What’s up?”
Danny smiled and rocked on his heels, “Well, see, here’s the thing. I got this awesome gift from my ‘rents, but they sent one too many. Thought you might like the extra.”
Steve’s eyes narrowed, “What is it?”
Danny widened his eyes and raised his eyebrows, “I’m sorry, does my partner not trust me? This is actually a bit rich if you think about it, given all of the times I am your only back up. And what gives with that anyway? Would it kill you to wait until you at least hear the sirens before running willy nilly into some suspects home? One of these times that suspect is gunna be home and…”
“Danny,” Steve said, shaking his head slightly, “I trust you. Believe me. The thing I’m not trusting is what you consider to be a gift that has leftovers.”
“Ah, but see, this gift is special. Beyond special even. There can only be one per person special. My ma suggested you, but if you want I can go give it to Chin?” Danny pointed over his shoulder with his thumb, “I’m sure he’d appreciate it.”
Steve sighed, “All right, already. I’ll take it. But I swear, if it’s another book on proper police procedure I’m going to…” He trailed off as Danny held out the ticket, “Seriously?”
Danny shrugged, “Seriously, if you don’t mind Grace going along. The ‘rents sent three down and pretty much demanded that I take Grace and show her what proper football is when the best of the AFC are playing the best of the NFC. The third is yours if you want it.”
Steve took the ticket gingerly, “You know, I’ve only been to one pro-bowl? This is…thank you.”
“Grace demanded that we wear Jet’s jerseys to the game, which will be moot point anyway when they win this weekend.”
Steve laughed, “I’m sure she did.”
“I swear! Want me to call her and prove it?” Danny pulled out his phone and wiggled it at Steve, “I can’t help it if she takes after her dad and grandparents. She’s a smart girl.”
Steve nodded, “I know. Ok. If the Jets lose Sunday, we wear their jersey to the pro-game.”
“Oh, they’ll win.”
“God I hope so.”
