This weekend, Ethan and I had a really good discussion about the move, and timing, and our wants/needs/likes for housing. We're shooting to move mid-month in May to avoid Memorial Day craziness

I hope everything works out well. But isn't February a bit early to look for apartments? I'm thinking of the Cities, where since people have to give 60 day notice, apartment openings for May don't show up until the beginning of March. Or are you guys looking for something better than the cheap-ass apartments I always lived in? :)
Too early to see the apartments themselves, yes; but to see the building and neighborhoods, and make sure the hallways don't stink of urine, and work out costing- no. We can deal with minor tweaks in floorplan as long as the community itself is good and the management company knows what it's doing.
We're not aiming for cheap, more comparable to what we're in right now; but because the cost of living is cheaper in Milwaukee, we're likely gonna end up with a better apartment for the same amount of rent. It's very likely we'll end up in an apartment with in-unit washer/dryer, for example. Because our primary criterion is easy freeway access, most of the "luxury" options are out. :)
Whenever you settle on a weekend to come on down, let me know. Schedule permitting, Kate & I could drive up to catch lunch/dinner/etc., during your visit?
good luck with all of that, when Dan eventually gets a job back home we'll be looking for an apt. for the first year and a house after that, but mostly it'll be up to Dan since I expect to stay in Korea for six months after he leaves (if he starts teaching in the fall, my contract finishes in Feb).
I'm not so picky about apts when we're not the one paying, but if we're shelling out the rent, yeah I'll be quite picky.
