OK, here you go, end of the world time. As sort of a VDay present to the wife, who has been at me to do this forever, I am actually going to post something other than a quiz. And, as I have little in the way of imagination, I am going to do a quick book count/review for the year.
Book 1) All-In-One CISSP Exam Guide - Shon Harris
Review: Eeeeevil. No... wait... that was the test. The Book was actually not that bad if you want a quick overview on Information Security, if by quick you mean a crash course of about 1000 pages and 10 separate domains. I thought that the administrative sections were better written than the tech sections, but maybe that is just me. Anyway, the wife thought this should count as more than one book given the time I spent working through it, but that would be cheating.
Book 2) Wee Free Men - Terry Pratchett
Review: I had sort of given up on Pratchett as going the overly repetitious route, but I was forced to eat my words here. I picked this up, based on a line from
mshades post, and I'm glad I did. In fact, if not for a brief cameo, this didn't even need to be a Discworld novel. Anyway, I loved it... go pick it up. *crivens*
Book 3) Spin State - Chris Moriarty
Review: Recommended by
tryslora and
arcaedia. I read this during the coal mine problems a few weeks ago, and can I say it got under my skin in a major way. It's an excellent book, and I highly recommend it. The sequel was already supposed to be out, but it looks like it was delayed to the summer. It's already on my wish list ;)
Book 4) The Skewed Throne - Joshua Palamatier
Review: Had to read this if only because of the little note Joshua put with his signature. If you know me, you know why. Anyway, it was lots of fun, and I'm looking forward to his next book.
Book 5) On Basilisk Station - David Weber
Review: OK, I actually, finally did it. I read a Weber book. It was fun military sci-fi, but I don't see what all the excitement is about. I thought "Spin State" was actually much better. Not that I disliked it, I just don't understand the popularity. I thought it was a little too black and white, with a hero that could do no wrong. Maybe it's just my cynicism showing through. I'm gonna read a couple more to see if it gets better, but I'm going to space them out a bit.
Book 6) Lords & Ladies - Terry Pratchett
Review: OK, remember when I said I had grown tired of Terry Pratchett. This book was one of the reasons why. Given my earlier luck with "Wee Free Men", I thought I'd take another crack at it, but this was Discworld to the core. Fun, but I've seen it before. Sorry
mshades. :(
OK, that's it. Has anyone noticed the earthquakes yet? Large meteors falling from the sky?
Just don't expect it again anytime soon. L8r!
