I have discovered something... very odd during my recent foray into Deck 12. It appears to be a small instrument made of durable, polished wood... with strings on the front. It curves in oddly at the center, and there are dark black markings in the middle of it too. It has a long neck and four strange pegs near its tip. I also found a strange bow ( Read more... )

That's, uh, that's a violin.

If--if--if you hold down one of the strings and run the bow over it, the-t-the pitch of the string changes. Like, the pitch of the note.

Hmm. Interesting. My kind didn't have anything like this...

[He's going to try it out.]

Have you been doing well?

I will have to practice, then. I suppose I shall not break it down into its various components.

Oh? That is good! It is always nice to hear you in good spirits.

You've already been told it's a violin, though I'm sorry to say I don't know how to play it. I prefer keyboards and pianos, myself.

I can't say I'm able to play either with any skill, but I'm sure I can find some music CDs around here you can listen to.

Huh. Haven't heard one of those in a while.

Although it sounds like you're strangling a cat.

Ah! Then you are familiar with this "violin" as well.

... Admittedly, I do need more practice. I have heard there are "help books" on such a thing.

You have a violin there. I think I can teach you ... if you haven't found someone else already.

No one has offered, no. Someone suggested finding a "help book", but I do tend to favor what you humans would call a more hands-on approach.

[Humans ... so he was something else. Was that why he typed?]

I can try to teach you. I'm a fast learner. I don't play violin, but I know the basics. Should be good enough to get you started ... really it's about learning the technique of music in general first. There's a piano in the library ... that would be a good teaching tool ... if you'd like to learn in private, though, I'd understand ...

[Kate, ever understanding of non-human needs.]

I don't know how I could attempt to learn in private when I can't even figure out how to hold this strange violin. Sometimes learning by observation is quite useful... a lesson would be quite fine.
