This happened to a friend of mine, not me.
Right today in English her class was writing a story pretending to be a firefighter during 9/11. The teacher was talking about how another plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington. Then one girl said, "Oh my God is Washington in America? I thought it was in London!"
(The girl is 16, by the way).
I know they live in the UK, but still...that's depressing.
