And then argue back "you're reactionary" when getting pointed out why that is stupid, with a ton of arguments, such as "Gun control legislation does not equal being responsible for the death

The best/worst part is that it's just false. Hitler actually liberalized gun regulations. After the Germans lost WWI, full gun registration was implemented, and it was difficult to get a license. Hitler liberalized these rules, and made guns much more easily available (for non-Jews, Jews weren't allowed to own guns at all.)

And that notion that the Holocaust wouldn't have happened if the Jews had been armed - I always wonder how the people who come up with those scenarios (in which I bet they fantasise about themselves as heroic Nazi-killers) envision that happening. Shoot the Gestapo men who came to arrest your family, then grab your spouse, your children (including a toddler), your grandmother, and your disabled uncle, and... what? Begin life as an armed rebel band? Yes, there was armed resistance against the Nazis in various places, with varying grades of success, but it simply wouldn't have been possible to most people, whether armed or not, and even if it had been possible, certainly wouldn't have been the guaranteed overwhelming success those people seem to envision.

Certain American conservatives (unfortunately often elected) believe something similar about slavery - if the slaves had guns, slavery would never have happened, therefore gun laws should be liberalised. I am really not sure what kind of brain you have to have to assume that slavery meant that the slaves could have guns.

Of course, the even more depressing part is that now a number of people of similar ideological bent are claiming that blacks should be grateful - slavery provided them with food and shelter, after all.

The really ironic thing here is that the Second Amendment was made largely because the Southern slave states wanted to keep their rights to form slave-hunting 'militia' groups - there's a lot of rhetoric by senators of the period about guns being necessary for free men to secure their freedom. As opposed to, y'know, slaves using them to secure theirs.

I remember a friend's conservative dad told me that gun control was wrong. After all, he said, Hitler supported gun control. He also supported banning abortion, I said. This shut him up.
