"No, I just like watching the pretty moving pictures..."

May 26, 2013 13:56

This happened a few weeks ago, I've just forgotten about it until last night when I was talking to hubby about it. It was when hubby's brother and brother's girlfriend were both living at our place. Every night around the same time I'd go downstairs to cook something for my hubby, my daughter, and me, and they would be downstairs in the living room ( Read more... )

That... would be a lot of credits... Do they even have that many people working on one of these episodes?

Meanwhile, she must have the patience of Job to sit through 2 weeks x 30 min (give or take) of something where she doesn't understand a word of what's going on. The "moving pictures" aren't always a good indication either. For example... can you imagine watching FlCl with in Japanese with no subtitles? It's insane enough with a script, but without, I think my head would explode.

Also...how can you NOT read the lines? Whenever something is subtitled, my brain *forces* me to read the text, even if film AND subtitles are in my own language (or in different languages I both understand).

Ugh, this. There is a show I watch on DVD where I invariably enable the subtitles, because half of the characters mumble and I can't understand them. When I can understand the dialogue, my brain still insists on reading the subtitles and it really, really annoys me.

I do this with a couple of series I watch with very diverse characters and accents. I have a hell of a time following dialogue with multiple accents flying around.

I think what's more idiotic is she just kept watching this anime without saying anything... I mean if she really wasn't familiar with the fact that foreign movies or shows can be translated, at least say, "That looks cool, but I don't understand what they are saying..." Then her husband could politely point out that it's being translated at the bottom.. But even so, it's very dumb to not know this very fact or not even notice the translations... =/

I am keenly interested in what the boyfriend thought after that little exchange.

When hubby and I were talking with him about it, he said his mind went totally blank for a second and didn't know quite how to answer. She apparently says a lot of stupid things, but he thinks that was probably the worst ever.

I wonder if she needs her eyes checked. I once realized it was time to get a new prescription when I had trouble reading subtitles on a movie. The "extended credits" theory is bizarre, but not being able to make out the words would at least explain how she didn't notice they were dialogue and not credits. As others have already pointed out, it's hard not to read subtitles.
