Mock trial doesn't start until December but I am already PUMPED!!!!!!

Questions for other New Yorkers: Is the case this year going to be civil, since last year's was criminal? (This will only be our school's third year of mock trial.) AND why are we not in nationals????

You guys aren't in Nationals because you have so many teams that you don't finish your state competition until after Nationals or at least too late to have any decent time to prepare for it.

:( The only thing I dislike about NY.

When is Nationals?

Nationals is usually, like, May 8-11 or something like that. I always missed having NY around, but honestly, the prospect of competing against a NY team pretty much scares the shit out of everyone because a) NY is like lawyer capital of the universe (whether that's true or not doesn't really matter :P) and b) you have so many freakin teams that if you did come to the competition you'd have so many more trials under your belts you wouldn't even break a sweat.

And to tell you the truth, the NY state competition is probably ten times more amazing than Nationals is anyway. More trials = better competition. Nationals is cool because you get to meet people from all over, but then you compete against crap teams like, oh I dunno, Guam or something absurd like that and it can be an enourmous (how the crap do you spell that?) crap shoot. So don't feel too left out. :D

There's NATIONALS?? God damn!

And the answer to your other question: maybe yes, maybe no. I think it is usually supposed to alternate civil-criminal-civil-criminal. But 2003 was criminal, and 2004 and 2005 were both civil, and 2006 was criminal again. So my guess is that this year will actually be a criminal case, and then they'll revert to the normal order.

ahhh I hope so. I can't imagine a civil case being qite as exciting as vehicular manslaughter.

I heard a lot of other NY teams were upset about the circumstances of last year's case (like they had had something similar happen at their schools).
