I got my day's digging yesterday. It wasn't entirely dry: in fact, by the end of the day, there had been two heavy downpours, although these were interspersed with patches of sun that were almost too hot

I was on a dig in (then-) Czechoslovakia for mesolithic stuff in 1991 and it was very eye-opening. First, 90% of the work was literally breaking rocks in the hot sun to get to or find any "dark earth." So I spotted that posthole in your photo right away. Second, the pieces of everything were tiny and incomprehensible. I think the big find of the summer was a "venus figurine" that was a little shard of clay with two barely perceptible bumps on it.
Later we went to meet one of the archaeologists in his university and saw that everything they did was essentially chemistry.
Basically, while it was kind of enjoyable in its way, it surely refocused my interest in history back to the relative present. :-)
Wow, yes, then you know *exactly* what my day was like. Czechoslovakia sounds a bit more exciting than climbing the hill at the end of one's own road, though.
I love this. And I love the detail that you have to surrender yourself to the group find but you get possessive of your patch.
After opening up this page yesterday intending to read this, I hosted a god awful row on Facebook and then Words With Friends was down, and I like doing that while half watching a tv thing... THEN I discovered the LJ app and went ferreting around reading all sorts of stuff from people who I'd no idea were still blogging here. It was lovely!
The app doesn't seem to metabolise apostrophes very well, but apart from that, it's actual functionality is better than the wordpress app, which I think is interesting.

It was all really interesting. There's drinks tonight for all the volunteers and I'm dithering about whether to go or not. My anti-social side is saying no.
Yeah, the LJ app has its faults but I use it a lot. I haven't downloaded the very latest version because I'd heard about that apostrophe issue.
