So for a final project a partner and I are making a board game for children who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes and their families and friends to play. It's gonna be cheap and easy to produce ( in the spirit of
Cheapass Games ) and each kid could get their own copy ( for free! ), etc

1) A 'race to the finish' isn't really a game if it's based solely on rolling dice. Kids will tire of it, because it becomes all about luck.
2) If there IS a luck element, be sure it affects everyone during the turn in some fashion.
3) A social auctioning or bartering impact makes for more sociable gameplay.
4) Create economies of control and shortage - perhaps in this case the economy is blood sugar, and the shortage is insulin. The players then have to compete to get their system into the best and healthiest balance. Perhaps you should take a cue from games like Puerto Rico or Settlers of Catan?
Just some thoughts. Honestly, if you are going to make a game, make it a good one, not just a 'dice rolling festival'. :-)
Have fun with it!

there's more to the game, and it's targeted at fairly young kids - we're going for something that's on par with the chutes and ladders crowd, but there's actually cards and some resourse allocation involved, and even a cooperative game play bit. :)
if you're interested and have the time, i'm happy to send you a copy of the proposal so far...
