opinion on voting.

Hey fellow mods. I hope this is allowed here, if not let me know and I'll be sure to delete it!

I'm sure you've seen me post here and may know that I have several LIMS. Well, I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best mod out there. I have my faults and I may not do things like they should be. But I learn and try to fix it.

Recently I've been trying to make the whole voting thing a lot better from reading things here as well as other LIMS communities. I link a post with guidelines on how to best leave comments and I'm not starting to leave voting open so that I receive a lot more. I make sure I read every comment and think to myself, 'will this help the maker see what is wrong with the icon and basically try to work on either staying away from or continuing to do it later?'. If they're not up to standards, I'll ask them to rephrase it and tell them what I'm looking for as far as a better comment.

Now, here's where everyone else comes in.

What more can I do to make it as fair as I possibly can? Someone just left a comment to one of my communities saying they think that it's unfair because, technique-wise, poor icons seem to receive more positive votes than icons better than them do. Now, believe me, I'm not saying their opinion is wrong. In fact, I'm glad they voiced their opinion because it's something I can look into and stuff.

But, while I said that sometimes some people's views of a great icon are much different than others (which they agreed), you just seem to wonder like "how did this icon get voted off?" or "how did this get voter's choice?". 'Cause the point they made comes into play, "are their friends voting for them?" I'm not saying I've seen this happen at my communities and I'm not saying it hasn't. But whether its my communities or not, I've seen it happen.

So what do you do in this situation? Do you just keep doing it as best as you can? What do you all think?

Sorry for rambling on, I know it's long, I'm just a very curious mod and want to make my communities as fair as they can. I know I can't make everyone happy, of course, but I like to do the best I can. And if this isn't the place to post this, let me know!
