October's Entertainments

From spaceweather.com“HARVEST MOON: Tonight's full moon has a special name--the "Harvest Moon." It is the full moon closest to the northern autumnal equinox. Long ago, before electric lights, farmers relied on the Harvest Moon to light up their fields at night, allowing them to harvest autumn crops even after sunset ( Read more... )

The trick about reading by moonlight for me is to not look directly at the word. This forces the eyes to use the black and white rods instead of the colour seeing cones. (Obviously I simply have an abundance of rods. Someone who sees colour would likely have the super sensitive cones.)

The story about the Brontë family points up just why you don't want to isolate children too much. If they don't build up an immune system, they catch things much more easily.

Ch--, a young friend of his and I went out to see all the stuff in the moonlight. My boy and I can perceive colors very well -- especially red. Green was harder for me. He can read without any problem at all. I cannot ... with a vengeance! (Astigmatism probably doesn't help.) The boy that accompanied us could do neither. It was interesting.

Nice factoids!

In my humble opinion, by the way, your posts would be easier to keep up with if they were shorter. (This one is 3-4 screens long. My perception of "I can read this now" seems to be 1, maybe 2, screens). If you put this stuff in 3 posts (literary/astronomical/geological), I would find it easier to go in, read one, come back later, read another, etc.

You are right. Back when I posted more consistently, my entertainments postings didn't tend to get this long. I will probably make an effort to break them down more if I post more thatn a couple at a time. It will make it easier for me to search for what I want to reference too.

I'm finding it interesting in lj that people want to tell a poster in their own journal how to post.

No offense to the previous poster, just an observation.

Re: the full moon. Do you believe that people act up during a full moon? When I lived in Idaho, working for Sun Valley resort, somebody always seemed to do something stupid, thus getting fired during a full moon. We went nordic skiing once during one which was pretty cool.

My son has had a bad week this week in school. The othe day he came home telling me the principal got on the PA telling everybody to be aware that the full moon made kids anxious. I kind of thought that was wrong of him.

Besides, elsewhere in this journal I'd just hit her with one hell of a question / challenge. If she sounded tense, it was probably just because of that.

Yes, I do believe the moon affects moods. But then I'm kinda witchy that way :) I'm sorry your son is having some trouble with the school -- God knows I think it's a tough environment for a kid. Some of the stuff that staff members do and say boggles me. A conversation about the possible effects of the moon could be interesting but that announcement was just going to end up being self-fulfilling.
