Title: By the Moon
Author:
modern_epitaphPairing: Drake/Josh
Word Count: 800 (can I coin the term 'octodrabble' here?)
Rating: PG
Summary: Josh watches Drake sleep at night.
Disclaimer: I don’t own them, no matter how hard I wish.
Notes: This is my first Drake and Josh fic. I actually got the idea from
folkloric_feel's MCD&J picspam posted earlier today. In #3, she says "I like to imagine that Josh likes to just watch Drake when he's sleeping, because really, who wouldn't? It's a beautiful sight." In this fic, Josh agrees. Thanks to my other half,
lone_wo1f for beta'ing for me, and for forcing me to watch Drake and Josh.

drakexjosh It’s a full moon night the first time Josh sneaks out of bed and tiptoes over to his brother’s loft bed. He could hear his brother whimpering in his sleep; he’s kicked his comforter onto the floor and, with the help of the moon, Josh can see a thin sheen of sweat on Drake’s face and soaking through his sleep shirt.
Josh grabs Drake’s duvet and climbs the ladder as quietly as he can. He pulls the blanket up over his brother and softly pushes his hair out of his eyes, wiping off some of the sweat.
“S’alright,” Josh murmurs sleepily to his brother. Josh climbs back into his own bed, and Drake sleeps soundly for the rest of the night.

Drake is facing Josh’s direction, though he’s been asleep for hours. He takes a deep breath in his sleep, and a small smile graces his face. Josh can’t help but smile back at him. It’s become a somewhat regular thing, Josh watching Drake sleep. He’s fascinated by the faces Drake makes when he’s asleep. They’re so much different from the Drake he interacts with every day; he’s somehow more vulnerable in the moonlight. As if the Drake Parker was ever vulnerable. Josh knows better.
Still smiling to himself, Josh makes a small fuss of tucking Drake in before going back into his own bed.

It’s a couple of weeks before Josh dares to do anything more than simply watch Drake. Lying on his back with an arm flung up over his head, Drake’s open hand invites Josh to touch. Josh hesitates, and then runs a single finger over Drake’s open palm. His fingers twitch out of reflex, but otherwise Drake doesn’t stir. Josh holds his breath as he traces each of Drake’s fingers with his own, feeling the calluses on his fingertips from his guitar playing contrasted with the softness of his palm.
His eyes roam over Drake’s skilled hand and down his arm. Josh’s fingers move from Drake’s hand to his wrist, slowly circling, exploring. He can feel his own heart pounding as he lowers his face down to Drake’s arm, dropping a small kiss on the pulse point there. Drake coughs in his sleep, and Josh jumps.
Feeling foolish, he reluctantly lets go of Drake’s arm and goes to get a glass of water before lying in his own bed, unable to stop thinking of Drake’s soft hand. He doesn’t get much sleep.

A clap of thunder wakes Josh suddenly. He sneaks a glance at Drake’s bed, where Drake is sitting up, his hair a mess and his eyes sleepy. Josh stays in bed that night.

Josh knows it’s only a matter of time before he gets caught. He knows there’s a possibility that Drake could feel the mattress sink when Josh rests his elbows on it, holding his head in his hands. He could feel Josh’s breath on his face when he dares to sneak another kiss to Drake’s forehead one night, but as far as Josh is concerned, that one would be worth it. He could hear the second rung of the ladder groan as Josh climbs up, no matter how hard Josh tries to avoid it.
It should come as no surprise then, when Josh climbs onto the loft and finds Drake staring back at him.
“Oh, um - ” Josh starts, fumbling to get off the loft.
Drake grabs hold of Josh’s pajama pant leg. “Josh?”
Josh’s jaw moves as he thinks of something to say, something to explain why he’s sitting on his brother’s bed in the middle of the night. He swallows thickly, unable to come up with anything to explain his behavior. “Uh, hey Drake,” he says, dumbly.
“What are you doing, man?”
Through the haze filling his head, Josh offhandedly realizes that the moon is full again. He’s mildly shocked that his Drake-watching obsession had gone on a month before he got caught.
“Um,” is all Josh can think to say. His face scrunches up, a deep blush coloring his face, though with just the moonlight, Drake doesn’t notice. “Just, um - I dunno?”
Drake’s eyebrows knit together in confusion. He looks ready to write this off as one of Josh’s quirks. “Um, alright then.”
Unable to look Drake in the eye, Josh climbs down the ladder and buries himself in his own comforter. Feeling like a complete idiot, he silently berates himself.
He chances a peek over to his brother’s bed, where Drake is lying on his side, staring at Josh. Josh lowers his blanket but still can’t bring himself to meet Drake’s eyes; he feels that shameful.

Drake sits silently next to Josh as he sleeps, his fingers slowly raking through Josh’s unruly curls. He drops a kiss to Josh’s temple.
“Love you too, brother.”
