Marcus' final point really baffled me - the bit about Costello's statement being a better statement than Woody Guthrie's guitar, but not being a better political statement - uhhh, whatthehell? It's a bit muddled and kind of a shitty way to end the interview...anyway.... I admire what he's trying to do, I guess. But overall this kind of uber-authoritative journalist pedantry makes me feel dead inside.
I posted that and then I was like, "wow...I write that kind of pedantic shit all the time...what a fucking asshole".....but you know what, i'm not really, like, good. Or serious - I think what gets me is the fact that this man takes himself more seriously than God.
I think when you reach a certain age you start to feel self-concious of forever having your name prefaced by "rock critic"*, so you feel obligated to give your chosen career some sort of made up gravitas.
Although, now that I think about it, for someone who was so incredibly aware of the audience's participation in music throughout the interview, he surprisingly forgot that woody wasn't necissarily writing for the world's most literate audience. But arguing the point would validate his overwraught sense of urgency over Elvis.
Athough, he is basically right about the whole grow the fuck up thing. Bah, I could talk about this all night...but I won't
