[Three days in this place, and he'd made no progress in deducing the motive behind this situation.  There seemed to be no pattern in who had been taken and how long they had been kept here.  Not even the victims who had been kept here for long periods at all knew anything real about the situation.  The few supposed reasons he'd heard were ludicrous

Very suspicious. Normally in a kidnapping the culprit would wish to keep tight control over the movements of the victims.
