{00} The Tower and the Locket

She stood on the cold concrete, a cool wind blowing on that cloudless night. Before her stretched what looked to be a tower - no, an elevator? - that stretched far beyond that of any normal building. The sight took her breath away, filling her with pride over the hard work of the creators. However, the elevator also brought a sense of forboding. Fear, even. Her feet did not allow her to step any closer to it, and she was just fine with that.

There was then a small, metallic sound from the ground to her right, accompanied by armored footsteps. Her head turned, lips parted in preparation to inquire who was out there, but she didn't see a single soul. Instead, on the ground, was a peculiar necklace. Wondering who it might belong to, she bent down and picked it up.

The necklace was a fine golden chain, a locket adorning its end. Shaped like a heart, the locket itself was a rich red color with gold trimming. Its surface was scratched, as if someone took a knife to it, but the small blue crystal in the center was untouched. As she ran a fingertip over its marred surface, she began to feel an intense need to keep the locket safe, mend it, and perhaps scold its previous owner for the negligence.

She felt guilty, but was curious to know what was inside. Perhaps the picture inside was a clue! Her fingers positioned themselves, and she began to pry it open. Before she could see what was inside, everything went dark.
