Match 8: Mutts. It may sound strange, and I realize that I'm probably the only person who feels this way, but I don't like The Far Side. And my roommate has pajama pants that have Mutts on them, which I prefer to the 2739th Far Side Page-a-Day calendar.

When the Jeremy-driving-illegally arc started, I was only reading the comics intermittenly, so I'm not sure, but I think you're right and there was no set-up. Jerry Scott was probably just applying the old writing maxim of starting the story as late as possible; you don't really need to see Jeremy take the car out, as the cop's going to tell his parents about that anyway, and as an added bonus you get a bit of dramatic intrigue of wondering why the police are at the house.

I don't remember exactly how much I paid for Dilbert DVDs, but I think it was $25 or $30. You probably could have just rented the set for less than that cost you.

Calvin and Hobbes: I always thought of you as the evil Calvin and your brother as the innocent Hobbes.

Abstain: Garfield has run its course, but I'm not familiar with the opponent.

Baby Blues: Did I mention that I had dinner at Jerry Scott's house?

Dilbert: Its funny -- in a life is sad sort of way.

For Better or For Worse

Abstain: Read Garfield comment

Calvin and Hobbes I remember tripping over the compilations of these comics on the floor
Garfield Our cat doesn’t eat lasagna. Maybe she would if we let her
Baby Blues
Dilbert There’s nothing wrong with living in a cube
For Better or For Worse I wish they would start growing older again
Blondie I’m trying to time when our mailman shows up so I can run into him
Hagar the Horrible
The Far Side Still the best

Gah -- all right, time to vote again, though I don't have much to say this round:

Calvin and Hobbes

"Careful! We don't want to learn anything from this experience!"

"I pragmatically turn my whims into principles."

Maybe there should be another mini-tournament when all of the C&H sub-arcs get to face off against each other. Snowmen vs. Stupendous Man? Spaceman Spiff vs. Roselyn (sp?)

Pearls Before Swine
I confess -- I don't actually like Pearls Before Swine very much. But, then, Garfield.

Monty
This is a really tough match: another consistently funny vs. occasional hilarity decision, but this time with the twist that both comics are actually good.

Dilbert

For Better or For Worse
I was genuinely concerned when their first (or whateverth) dog died back in like fifth grade.

Blondie

Hagar the Horrible
Although I am very happy to know of the existence of Lio.

The Far Side
I was looking through an old collection once and I think I decided that like 80% of Far Side comics are about suffering or death. Hilarity!
